Bishop Tommy's obituary
Alabama, to Tommy and Susie Jones.
Bishop confessed Christ at an early age and united with the Apostolic Overcoming
Holy Church of God, Inc., under the leadership of the late Bishop Jasper Roby, at the
17th Street AOH Church of God. He was filled with the Holy Ghost at the tender age
of sixteen.
Bishop received his public education within the Birmingham City Schools, graduating
with honors from Jackson-Olin High School, in 1964. He later matriculated at Thornton
College in Harvey, IL, where he majored in history.
On August 28, 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary E. Tate, who has
been his partner and supporter in life and ministry for fifty-three years. Each success
and achievement that he accomplished in life was undergirded by the faithful prayers
of this devoted intercessor and woman of God.
Bishop Jones accepted his call to the ministry in 1965, and attended Western Regional
Bible College, San Francisco, CA. In 1969, he was appointed to the pastoral office at Helen
Durham Temple AOH in Chicago, IL. He has since served in the pastorate at Phillips
Chapel AOH in Louisville, KY (1979-1989), 35th Avenue AOH (1989-2002), and Greater
New Beginning Apostolic Church (2002-2020) in Birmingham, AL. In 2004, he was
elevated to the Bishopric in the Apostolic Church of Promise and subsequently served
as Jurisdictional Bishop of North Alabama in the God’s Grace Apostolic Fellowship.
Known as the Twenty-third Psalm preacher, Bishop Jones’s motto was, “The Lord is
my Shepherd, I shall not want!” He was an avid reader and student of the word of God,
