Beverly's obituary

Beverly Jean McClure passed away quietly on the morning of November 2, 2021 at the age of 98 in Tucson, Arizona. She was born on February 15, 1923 in Los Angeles, California, the oldest child of Lillian Jean Weir McClure and John Quayle McClure. Her younger siblings were Barbara West Macdonald and Dr. John Quayle McClure, Jr., both deceased in the last 12 years.

She was proud of her family’s early settlement in Los Angeles. Her grandfather John McClure came overland from San Francisco at a time before there was rail service to LA to found several flourishing wineries and was a member of the Board of Education. Her grandmother Nellie May Quayle McClure, came as a child in 1888 to become a teacher in Roscoe, CA and organizer of several early social clubs in Los Angeles: The Wednesday Morning Club, The Ebell Club, the Manx Society, and was the first PTA president of the Gates Street School. Her mother’s parents immigrated to the United States as children travelling alone, escaping pogroms in their native Russia. They came to LA from Chicago just before Lillian was born in 1900, and lived a hard life after her father was blinded and a fire destroyed everything they had. All the older girls worked after 8th grade to help the family.

Her father John Quayle McClure was the founder of National Automobile and Casualty Insurance Company several related companies. After her parents married, her mother came to be a leading member of LA society, including a Board member of the Assistance League of Southern California and an active member of the Hollywood Bowl Association and Opera Guild. Beverly grew up on Country Club Drive and as a teen on June Street in the Hancock Park are of LA.

She attended the Marlborough School for Girls, and graduated from Stanford University in 1944. She was a member of the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma at Stanford. She was briefly married to Robert Bruce Errett. Following a serious illness, she turned to helping others as a foster mother, caring for newborns who were available for adoption. She thereafter lived in Utah and Tucson in her home on Squash Blossom Lane. She passed away after a long life in a care home in Tucson.

She leaves a niece, Carolyn West and three nephews, John West and Scott and David McClure as well as a grandniece and 2 grand nephews and a great grandniece.
