Betty's obituary
Betty Nelson, age 90, of Surprise, Arizona, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born with a spirit of adventure and a heart full of generosity, Betty lived a long and beautiful life defined by hard work, humor, and kindness. She traveled the world with curiosity and joy, collecting memories, stories, and friendships wherever she went. Whether she was camping in the great outdoors, hiking new trails, or enjoying the magic of theatre and musicals, Betty embraced each experience wholeheartedly.
Betty took great pride in her work with the City of Phoenix, where she was affectionately known as the “Tree Lady.” Her dedication to caring for the city’s natural spaces brought her tremendous joy. She also poured her heart into volunteering as a Navigator at the airport, supporting families through Compassionate Friends, giving her time to Phoenix Theatre, and nurturing her church community through the ministry of Kitizio, a church she helped plant and support. Service was woven deeply into who she was, and countless people were warmed by her generosity and steady presence.
Betty was preceded in death by her cherished husband, Neil, and her son, Mark (Joni Gehr [Jeff]). She is survived by her devoted daughters Victoria Wuerfel (Brian) and Julie Nelson; her beloved grandchildren Kara Harvey (Matt), Jay Wuerfel (Megan), Kylene Mays (Marc), Stepanova Nekeel (Emily), David Wuerfel (Sarah), Kiev Nekeel (Ami), and Jeff Gehr (Daisy); as well as 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply. Her family was her greatest pride, and her legacy of warmth and strength lives on through each of them.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 6, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the North Mountain Visitors Center. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor a remarkable woman who touched so many lives.
Betty will be remembered always for her laughter, her resilience, and the love she so freely gave.
