Betty's obituary

Betty Faye Stewart departed this world and made her transition into God’s arms on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Betty was the only girl out of two brothers from the union of Abel Rhyne and Margaret Rhyne. She was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on September 8, 1936. Her days as little girl growing up in Gastonia, NC consisted of attending elementary school, church and Sunday school at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, working with her grandmother, Leslie Lewis that she loved dearly and spending time in a home full of love with her mother, father and brothers. She went to Highland high school from K-12th grade and graduated in 1954. Upon graduating, she left North Carolina to pursue New York City College. She pursued one year of college and then started making a living for herself. She had her first child, Keith Rhyne while residing in New York City in 1957. After he was born, she left New York City and returned to North Carolina with her family. She then decided to move to Washington, DC and eventually sought employment with the United States Postal Service, where she remained until her retirement in 1992. That is where she met her husband and soul mate of 52 years, Walter Stewart. From their union, she had her second son, Mark Stewart, born in 1965. Betty received awards, certificates of achievement and appreciation for her contributions to the US Postal Service, all while returning to school and receiving her Real Estate License in the 1980-90s. Her younger adult years consisted of working in the Post Office, where she met many friends that became more like family, becoming a homeowner, and being a wife and mother.
Betty’s later adult years drastically changed after her retirement when she became a grandmother to her youngest granddaughter Jasmyne, in 1992. Betty took pride in taking care of her granddaughter and helping to raise her. During these years, investing in her granddaughter became of most importance, as well as, being a nurturing, loving wife and mother to her two sons.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Stewart (2015), her father, Abel Rhyne (1982), mother, Margaret Rhyne (1997), two brothers, Abel Lester (2000) and Alfred Rhyne (1980) and son, Keith Rhyne (2019). Betty leaves to mourn her son Mark Stewart, granddaughter and caregiver, Jasmyne Yeboah and son- in- law, Wallace Yeboah, as well as Jasmyne’s mother, Yvonne Gross and husband, grandson Koby Belton and his wife and children, granddaughter Michaela Ford and her children, her nieces Lashawn Rhyne and Drennan Rhyne Paylor (Troy), her nephew Abel Rhyne and his wife and children, sister-in-law Johnnie Rhyne, all of her great nieces and nephews and her step daughter, Marilyn Wescott and her husband and family, as well as, a host of cousins, extended family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. We all will miss her loving heart, loyalty to her family, fun spirit, laughter, compassion, dancing to her favorite artist Charlie Wilson, asking for a Coke- A- Cola, and saying all of what she doesn’t like instead of what she does like!
