Betty Jean (Madison) Reo passed away February 25, 2018. A retired weather technician with the U.S. Weather Service in Los Angeles, for two decades she was known as the voice of NOAA Weather Radio in Southern California. Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Betty graduated from high school and moved to Washington, D.C., where she trained and worked during World War II as a U.S. Weather Service technician. Among her duties was advising government officials and lawmakers about weather conditions in the nation's capital from the floor of the U.S. Senate. She married U.S. Air Force Major Cosmo D. Reo in 1950. On the property, which also served as the family's home, Betty and Cosmo raised their three children. In the 1970s, she returned to her career with the Weather Service and was assigned to its former office in the U.S. Federal Building in Westwood, where she re-established her role as a meteorological technician. Her duties included compiling forecast information for and recording weather-radio broadcasts, serving as a media spokesperson for the Los Angeles Weather Service office, and assisting Southern California television weather personalities in developing their forecasts.
