Betty Mae Ng, a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, July 18, 2025. She was 93 years old.

Born Betty Wong in Canton, China, and the eldest of ten kids, Betty immigrated to the United States at the age of 15 to reunite with her parents, Dora and Sydney, and her siblings in San Francisco. In 1957, she married Dr. Henry Ng, and together they raised a family of five children, living in Davis, CA, Washington D.C., and Richmond, CA, before settling permanently in San Francisco.

Betty’s involvement in her community began early with her participation in the 1954 Miss Chinatown Pageant, and continued throughout her lifetime. She went on to achieve additional honors during her life, including Self-Help for the Elderly’s Lady of Benevolence in 1994, CWAA Mother of the Year in 1997, and Chinatown Qipao Queen in 2009. Betty held a leadership role in the Wong Family Association’s Women’s Auxiliary. She was also an active member of the Hoy Sun Alumni Association and the Chung Lau Drama Club, among others. In addition, Betty was an accomplished businesswoman, as she co-founded a successful real estate business with her sister.

After retiring from her career as a real estate broker, Betty continued to embrace life with joy and energy. She performed throughout the city with Chinese dance and singing groups. She was an active participant and volunteer with the Self Help for the Elderly programs at the Jackie Chan Senior Center. Betty enjoyed hula dancing, karaoke singing, socializing, and spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Henry and her daughter Vanessa. She is survived by her children: Jennifer (Elias), Daniel (Teresa), Nancy (Ian), and Kenny (Flavia), five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Jennie, Marilyn, Raymond, Mabel, Edmund, and Sherman, along with many nieces and nephews.

Betty treated her family like friends and her friends like family. Her vibrant spirit, kindness, generosity, and zest for life touched all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.

Visitation Hour will be held at Green Street Mortuary on Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 4:00-5:00 pm.

Funeral will be held at Green Street Mortuary on Sunday, August 3, 2025 at 12:00 pm, followed by graveside service at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
