Betty "Scoop" Anne Barksdale Dishner Mattson, born on October 1, 1933 in Duffield, Virginia, to the late Venus Dishner and the late Lee Dishner, passed away at age 84 on May 24, 2018 in Johnson City, Tennessee. She graduated from Bristol High School in 1951 and East Tennessee State University in 1955. Betty served in the Air Force Reserves from 1955 to 2018 in the Korean War. She was the beloved wife of the late Matt W. Mattson Jr.; former wife of the late Russell Barksdale. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William Dishner, Buster Dishner, Clyde Dishner, and James Dishner; and sisters, Mae Rutter, Reba Hayes, Clara Hidalgo, and Wanda Barker. Betty is survived by her son, Russell Barksdale Jr.; sister, Edith Aline Finkle; grandchildren, Christian Barksdale, Nathaniel Barksdale, and Joshua Barksdale; great-grandchild, Wyatt Michael Barksdale; nieces, Sharon Hope Dishner, Priscilla Lee Dishner, Jean Dishner Moore, Wendi Stapleton, Annah Courts, Sheryl McKenzie, and Erin Miller; and nephews, Clyde Dishner Jr., William Dishner Jr., Mark Finkle, Mike Finkle, and Harvey Barker. Not to mention, extended family, Leonard Dishner and his young child Eric. Betty enjoyed duty, honor, country and was an avid philosopher/political theorist, and was very interested in genealogy. She was a member of Homeland Baptist Church, and she was a board member of Republican Re-Election Committee. Betty Mattson was a special kind of breed, Too weird to live, too rare to die. May she rest in eternal peace. Friends and family members may attend the memorial service on Thursday, May 31.
