Betty's obituary
She was the second oldest of the Kwan siblings. Betty was always known to be a compassionate, attentive, and selfless sister.
In 1963, Betty married Paul Wong and moved to Montreal, Canada where they grew into a family of four, adding Pamela in 1966 and Edward in 1969. In 1980, Betty and the children moved to Glendale, Arizona. She also realized the opportunities of immigrating to Canada and the United States for her children. She eventually became a US citizen in 2007 and voted in the US presidential election for the first time in 2020. It was here that she dedicated herself to a career as a hard-working waitress at her sister and brother-in-law’s restaurant until her retirement in 2005.
After retirement, Betty pursued her interest in traveling. She made several trips to China – two to meet her granddaughters, one visiting her hometown and viewing a 200-year old structure built by her great-grandfather, and numerous other interesting sites for leisure. Betty also traveled to Alaska, California, Caribbean, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Mexico, Illinois, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, Panama Canal, Utah, Virginia, State of Washington and D.C.
Betty loved all things Hong-Kong-style which included books, movies, music, and – most importantly – food. You could catch Betty belting out Cantonese songs, wrapped up in an action-packed Asian film, dancing to music, and eating Tao Garden virtually anytime. Her cultural roots and pride were evident and endearing, especially to those who knew her well.
Betty’s warm heart, gentle demeanor, and lively soul were cherished when she was with us, and her absence is felt by many. She enjoyed spending time with all her family members, sharing stories and meals and helping out whenever needed. She taught her children and grandchildren how to prepare some of her favorite Chinese dishes such as minced pork, ginger beef, salty fish and pork, house fried rice, and Chinese sausage (lap cheong) over rice.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents – Yem Kong Kwan and Chou Ying Woo, and son – Edward Wong. She is survived by her siblings – May Joe (neé Kwan), Kathy Yee (neé Kwan), Karen Kwan, Kai Kwan (neé Kwan), Annie Willmore (neé Kwan), and Rolena Woo (neé Kwan); daughters – Pamela Chavez (neé Wong) and Dorothy Wong (neé Moy); grandchildren – Felicia Chavez, Vanessa Borkowski (neé Chavez), Louis Chavez, Maya Wong, and Sakue Wong; and great-grandson – Evan Borkowski.
