Betsy's obituary
Betsy Melnick Feuerstein, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and botanical enthusiast, passed away on June 9, 2023. Born in Walton, NY on April 3, 1941, to William (Bill) and Virginia Williams Melnick, Betsy's unwavering spirit left a lasting impression on all those who crossed paths with her.
Betsy attended Bucknell and Vanderbilt Universities, where she studied nursing. She subsequently made her home in Memphis, TN. In 1973, one of her dreams was realized when she built her cherished home and greenhouse in the Greentrees neighborhood of East Memphis. This home served as a haven for her extensive collection of plants, reflecting her deep love of nature. The family greatly appreciates the support she received in her later years from her Greentrees neighbors, who noted that she offered to help others, but was reluctant to accept assistance for herself.
Betsy had an independent and adventurous spirit and had several passions in life. Her main passion for ferns and other tropical plants led her many times to the jungles of South America, especially Ecuador, in pursuit of rare and unique species. She cared deeply for her friends and “second family” in Ecuador. She formed and operated 'Adventures Unlimited,’ a boutique adventure travel company that coordinated and led numerous expeditions to South America. This dedication led her to found the Memphis Fern Society. Betsy frequently shared species samples she collected with representatives of University Botany Departments and Botanical Gardens across the globe. This resulted in having several previously unclassified plant species being named after her (e.g., Xanthosoma feuersteiniane). She was featured with her photo in the Commercial Appeal as the "Fern Lady" of Memphis. Betsy's enthusiasm also led to appearances on WHBQ’s 'Straight Talk with Marge Thrasher' TV show, where she was known as The Plant Doctor and shared her knowledge about plants and their care.
Betsy is survived by her three children: Marty of Woodinville, WA, David of Austin, TX, and Nikki of Orcas Island, WA, and her grandchildren Alisa, Jason, and Laura. Her brother Don Melnick and his wife Rosalie, of Lacey, WA, are also among her survivors. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Virginia Melnick.
In recognition of her deep love for Ecuador, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Fe y Alegria (www.feyalegria.org.ec) an organization dedicated to promoting quality education in the country that she adored.
