Bernice's obituary

Peacefully, surrounded by family, at Credit Valley Hospital, on Tuesday, February 25th, 2025, in her 98th year. Bernice Isobel Currell (née Laird), beloved wife of the late Robert (Bob) Currell, for 58 years. Beloved mother to Alan (Ann), David (Pam), Ralph, Janet, Robert, Bruce (Jeanne), Brian (Lisa), and Donald (Christine). Cherished Grandma to Emily (Caleb), Andrew (Brittany), David (Caitlin), Madeleine, Aidan (Meg), Sarah, Malcolm, Finn, Bertie, and Emma. Delighted great-grandmother to Miles.

Beloved sister-in-law to Brenda Dunton, and aunt to Dona Theriault (Richard), Diane Thompson (late Scott), Maryann Hunt (Tony), and their families. Special “Mavis Road friend” to Felicia Houtman, Ward Kennedy, and Rosemarie Curry (late Elgin).

Bernice was pre-deceased by her parents Jack & Vera Laird, brother Jack Laird (Ruth), sister Marg Dunton (Don), brother-in-law Elmer Currell (Audrey), daughter Anne, granddaughter Evangeline, nieces Debbie & Cindy Laird, and close cousin Jean King (Floyd).

Bernice was a keen student and piano player. She enjoyed working in the Math Department of Canada Life Assurance, and living nearby at the Elm Street YWCA, before focusing on raising her fortunate family. Even into her late 90’s, Bernice would recite poetry and sing songs, memorized decades ago.

The family wishes to thank the following caring medical professionals, as well as Bernice’s many kind and helpful neighbours: Peel Paramedics, Credit Valley emergency staff, Dr. Barbara Clive, Sheridan Medical (Dr. Sheshgiri & Dr. Kubazky), One Heart Care (Dr. Kalaparambath), Sheridan Pharmacy, Dr. Kevin Campbell Dentistry, HCC Mississauga Halton, Spectrum Healthcare PSW services, St. Elizabeth Healthcare physiotherapy, and Foundation Chiropody.

As per Bernice’s wishes, there will not be a visitation or service, but the family will have a private spring inurnment at Springcreek Cemetery, Clarkson. Arrangements entrusted to The Simple Alternative.  Please feel free to share condolences, memories, and photos on this website. For those who wish to make a memorial donation, Bernice was fond of the “Sleeping Children Around The World” charity.
