Bunny's obituary

Bernice (Bunny) Creitz Brown Warren went home to be with the Lord, with her family at her bedside on June 26, 2020 at the Glenridge, Sarasota, Florida. She was 96 years old.

Bunny is survived by her son Herbert B. Brown, Jr. (Susan), of Johns Island, SC, two granddaughters, Jessica D. Brown and Kerry A. Brown both of Charleston, SC.

Bernice Elizabeth Creitz was born January 1, 1924 in Pottsville, PA, second child of Chester and Matilda (Tillie) Kriston Creitz. Bunny moved with her mother and sister to Baltimore during the Depression, where her mother opened her house to “roomers and boarders”, men who found work at the Bethlehem Steel plant in Sparrows Point. Bunny and her sister Carman, helped with cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and setting tables for three shifts of men coming in to eat at their home. One of the daily chores was washing the white marble steps to their home on Greenmount Avenue.

Bunny graduated with honors from Eastern High School, an all-girls school in Baltimore. After graduation, Bunny went to work at the Department of the Army as a secretary during the war years and advanced to the highest position she could reach as a civilian employee in the Army.

Bunny loved roller skating and especially roller dance skating. She won each of the individual roller-skating metals that were available at the time. She went on to be Maryland State Roller Dance Champion with her partner in 1946 and 1947. Bunny also had a great voice and sang live on the radio on Saturdays.

After World War II, Bunny worked during the summer at Camp Karamack, an adult summer camp in the Poconos. Bunny made friends with Katherine (Kitty) Brown, and Kitty introduced her to her brother, Herb who had just returned from Europe having served in the army as a 1st Lieutenant during World War II. Bunny and Herb were married on October 2nd, 1948.

Bunny and Herb were a real team. Herb worked for Balfour in its Fraternity Division. Sensing an opportunity in the new Balfour Commercial Division, they moved to Chadds Ford, PA to run the combined Philadelphia/Baltimore territory. Bunny used her business skills to help the business grow. Bunny was also a leader. She was the International President of Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority, a non-academic service organization.

Bunny and Herb’s favorite vacation spot was Ocean City, MD. They loved boating and fishing. Herb died on March 30, 1984, three-months before he was set to retire. They had been married 35 years.

Several years following Herb’s death, Bunny met her second husband, Wayne Warren. They were married for 30 years. Wayne predeceased her in death at the Glenridge in 2018.

Bunny was the ultimate care giver and brought smiles to the faces of everyone she met. At Glenridge, Bunny would carry handfuls of Hershey kisses and Dove chocolates with her. Wherever she went she would greet the staff or a resident with “you look like you could use a “hug and a kiss” and hand them one of each. It is her loving Christian Spirit that we all miss.

Bunny was preceded in death by her sister Carman in 2002. In 1995 Carman wrote this poem about her sister.

“Ode To My Sister

I remember when I was teach, you had to learn.

I was older, I had to preach, you had to learn.

Whatever we played, I in charge.

You always let me boss.

We hang man, hop-scotched real large.

Erased the pave, of course you loss.

We grew up then both in teens

Cut the rug, dressed like Queens.

My little sissie, grew up fast

She skates, paints, sews, now I am last.

Left each other for our true loves,

Had our kids, remained apart,

Years went by, we lost our loves.

They’re with God, we with broken hearts.

Growing old now, I teach no more,

My siss is in charge, she big boss now.

The Lord stepped in, and put little Chief in charge.

Love, Carmie

P.S. Thank God for “Little Chief”
