My grandmother (Nani, as we called her) was such a generous, energetic, kind woman. I know everyone thinks that about their grandmother, but she was unique. I am blessed to have 40 years of memories with her. Every Christmas we would bake cookies… 4, 5, 6 different types… sprinkles, flour, bowls and beaters everywhere… hours of clean-up ahead of her, and Nani just loved it. But she wasn’t just your typical grandmother, standing around in an apron, baking and cooking. She loved the ocean, she loved getting her hands dirty. She was an accomplished fisherman, crabber, clammer, you name it. She could drive a fishing boat, gut a fish, clean and steam clams by the hundreds, sit at the table and pick crabs for hours just to make us her famous crab cakes. She could roller skate circles around you, looking beautiful and young in her skating costumes and skirts. She loved to dance and sing, I remember going to the annual Ocean City, MD Bavarian Festival with her and dancing til our little legs were too tired to stand. She would take us the OCMD boardwalk day after day, “walking the boards,” she would play putt putt/mini golf with us every day. She taught me to love playing cards and crossword puzzles … she loved games of all sorts. I’ll never forget the Christmas we taught her to play Wii Bowling. She loved all things pink and white. She loved my mom (Susan) so much. She always said, “Susie isn’t a daughter-in-law to me, God gave me a real daughter.” And of course her only son, Herb (Herbie), was her whole world. Nani loved so big and was so happy and cheerful and always smiled. I miss her so much. I love you, Nani. Take care of Poppy and Pop Pop in heaven.
