Bernardo's obituary
Bernie was born on October 1, 1959 to Bertha Samaniego and Bernardo Garcia in Los Angeles. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High school in 1977, He went on to study child development at East Los Angeles Community College. Shortly after, Bernie transferred to Cal State of Los Angeles where he earned his bachelors in education. During this time he had multiple jobs working at union bank child care center, head start and he also had his own nursery business. He had the heart for teaching and paid his own way through college .
After graduation, he landed his first teaching position at LAUSD . He spent the next 24 years teaching children in underserved communities where poverty was apparent and the need for hope was needed. He used his talent in music to teach children how to play instruments and how to use their voices for change. Bernie was truly a shaper of the youth. He spent his years teaching his students how to garden and appreciate Mother Nature. In 1985, he met Sylvia Baker, and they wed in 1986, going on to have 3 children, Dustine Garcia, Vienna Garcia and Desmond Garcia. He was later blessed to have two grandchildren who he adored Jayden Hernandez and Bowie Hernandez.
Bernie was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he often mentioned. He was unendingly proud of his children, grandchildren and family and always tried his best to support them. Throughout his life Bernie made so many friends of whom some became brothers. He carried a light heartiness and was always so positive. He was giving, caring, funny, loving, creative, intelligent, wise, kind hearted and very loved. He truly loved the world and people.
Bernie was also a passionate musician, reader, writer and gardener and could often be found under his fig tree with his favorite playlist that included David Bowie, Tom Petty and Morrissey (the list goes on). Bernie was a life long learner who wasn’t afraid of learning something new. He respected people and brought a light to those around him. Most importantly, He loved Jesus and spent a large part of his youth as a bible study youth pastor where he led people with his music to the lord.
Anyone who knew Bernie knew that he was the most loving father, husband, papa and friend a family could ask for. Bernie was predeceased by his mother Bertha Hernandez and brother Raul Robles. He is survived by his wife Sylvia Garcia, his children Desmond Garcia, Dustine Garcia & Vienna Garcia, and his grandchildren Jayden and Bowie Hernandez.
