Bernardina's obituary

Bernardina Uy, fondly known as "Nelly" by her many friends and family, passed away in Queens, New York on January 12, 2019 at the age of 92. Born on March 12, 1926 in Pangasinan, Philippines to Prudencio Castro and Florentina Viray, Bernardina was a graduate of San Francisco State and worked in administration at Mount Sinai Hospital for many years. She loved cooking, supported the Filipino American Society in Queens, and was a deeply committed member and volunteer of the Immaculate Conception Church. She was one of the leaders in bringing our Lady of Manaoag to the homes of devotees, where prayers and novenas were offered to our Lady. For her tireless work, she was named Hermana Mayor by her peers. She was humbled and proud of that honor. She was married to Antonio J. Uy and was the beloved mother of Salvador and Bernadette. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexander, Theodore, and Oliver.

Bernardina's wake will be held at the Bernard Dowd Funeral Home on Friday, January 18 from 4-8 p.m (16520 Hillside Ave., Jamaica, Queens). Her funeral service will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church on Saturday, January 19 at 9:30 a.m (86-45 Edgerton Blvd., Jamaica Estates, Queens).
