Bernard's obituary

Born on August 20, 1940, in Annapolis, Maryland, and passed away on Friday, March 21st,2025 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Bernard was the son of Charles "Sharpie" Brashears and Marget "Peggy" Butler-Fleming. He was preceded in death by his sister Helena "Sissy" and is survived by his sister Constant Hayden.

Bernard was raised by his grandmother Helen Allen. Bernard graduated from Cardozo High School in Washington, D.C. Bernard had a passion for dancing, and his Favorite dance was "the slop." His skill on the dance floor earned him the title of "King of the Dance," leading to his well-known nickname, DC Sloper. He was a vibrant presence at any gathering and seemed to know someone wherever he went. Bernard was a member of the DC Sportsmen, a local group in Washington, D.C., and was its last surviving member. In the 1970s, he worked as a DJ in Maryland and the D.C. area, sharing his love for music with many. Bernard held various jobs throughout his life, working at Cavalier’s, Pepco, Food King, and Pimlico Raceway—a place he especially enjoyed for both work and camaraderie. He loved helping other’s always available to lend a hand to others. Bernard’s presence brought joy to those around him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Above all, Bernard cherished his family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved daughter Nicole Brashears-Mintz; son-in-law Donnell Mintz; granddaughter Taylor Mintz; grandson Tyler Mintz; sister Constance Hayden; and a host of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
