Photo and text from my Facebook : We’ve been friends for over 2 decades - before we were academics - and he was my brother in so many ways. We traveled many roads together, critically supported each other, wrote together, and tried to figure out what it meant to be Chinese American hip hop heads, martial artists, fathers, sons, partners, scholars, professors, and activists.
Years ago he brought me to Hong Kong as a visiting scholar, and years before that we co-authored an important Rethinking Schools article, “You’re Asian, How Can You Fail Math?” that has been reprinted and used widely since.
Here we are the last time we were together face to face, pre-pandemic, when I came to Georgia to speak, and he flew down from NC to hang out with me. He was always looking out for our health, and he pushed us to go workout at the hotel.
I’m still in shock. 46 is too soon. All love to his daughter Raye and wife Jenny. I already miss you my brother.

He will be forever in our heart and he is the best teacher I have ever seen. RIP
