Beni's obituary

My loving mother Beni Patel (Dharmishtha) passed away peacefully on 17 April 2021. She was surrounded by her loved ones at home by her bedside, she was ready to let go and did so peacefully. She devoted her life to her family and friends, as a loving daughter, sister, wife, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, mother, aunt and friend.

Mum was born in Nairobi, Kenya on 30 May 1945 to Chanchallaxmiben and Manibhai Patel. As the youngest daughter, she was special to everyone and truly a mother to all; before she had me, she helped raise so many of her nieces and nephews and formed her own unique bonds with each of them which they cherished throughout her life. My Mum's life was a journey unlike many others in our family. She was the first girl in her family to go to University where she attained her Pharmacy Degree and made lifelong friendships in India. She then went on to practice Pharmacy in Toronto, surrounded by wonderful friends, many of whom remained an important part of her life. She married my father Chandravadan Patel (known to most as CK) in April 1982, and devoted her life to looking after her family members and to raising me, always calling me her little miracle.

She bravely overcame breast cancer at a young age, which instilled a unique resilience in her, built on a foundation of love and goodwill. Over the years, she continued to face each new challenge with courage and positivity. Even in the most difficult circumstances, her creativity flourished as she continued to make the beautifully decorated coconuts which she is well-known for, and began to hand over care of her precious bonsais to Dad. She loved helping others, and could frequently be seen fixing everyone’s saris at events and weddings! She just couldn’t bear to let someone walk around with a sari that was less-than-perfectly-pinned, and everyone knew they could count on her to be there when they needed. She loved giving to others - her time, her energy and of course her delicious food. She will be lovingly remembered as an elegant busybody!

Her courage, resilience, positivity, kindness, creativity, beautiful smile, grace and elegance (in no specific order) were what she was known for. Mum always saw the best in others, and taught us to do the same.

She loved her family fiercely and redefined the meaning of true friendship. Everyone whose lives she touched will surely have fond memories of times spent with her. She always felt so lucky to be in so many people's thoughts and prayers, and we as a family, will always be so grateful to each of you for all the joy and happiness you brought her.

She will be dearly missed, but her life and her impact will be celebrated forever.
