Ben's obituary
In Loving Memory of Ben Perkins
Ben Perkins died in Peoria, IL on Wednesday, October 11th at 11:50pm, surrounded by family. Ben was a devoted father, doting grandfather, and an innovative healthcare pioneer. While we mourn his passing, we celebrate the vibrant life he lived, filled with generosity, laughter, and a touch of his fun-loving (and borderline inappropriate) sense of humor.
Benny J. Perkins Jr. was born on October 14th, 1956 in Peoria, IL. Ben was the son of Thelma Weaver and the late Joe Perkins. He is also survived by his sister, Bev Musser. Although his family had roots in Arkansas, Ben spent most of his life living in Peoria and Knoxville, IL.
Ben graduated from Cuba High School in 1974, alongside his lifelong best friend, Kim Stoneking. He then enrolled in Spoon River College, where he was the first male to graduate from their nursing program. Ben spent the entirety of his career working in long-term care. He progressed from being a nursing assistant, to bedside nurse, to nursing home administrator, to regional director. In his role as a healthcare administrator, Ben was nothing short of a visionary. His creative solutions and commitment to improving the healthcare system had a lasting impact, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and peers. He was the recipient of multiple awards for his nursing home culture-change efforts. He was unapologetic and had high expectations (and apparently ran a tight department head meeting…), but offered immense support and was always willing to put in the work alongside others. He had a unique ability to tackle complex issues with a smile and a humorous anecdote, making even the toughest challenges seem conquerable. Ben was not only a pioneer in his field but also a source of inspiration for those fortunate enough to work alongside him. He was a tireless advocate for his residents and staff and enjoyed mentoring others in the profession.
Ben was the father of Sarah (Nathan) Myers and Mallory (Nate) Becraft. As a father, he strived to be the best dad he could, teaching the values of kindness, empathy, and the importance of a well-timed dad joke. His daughters’ lives are filled with fun and warm memories thanks to his dedication to making them feel loved and supported. Saturday mornings with Dad routinely started with homemade pecan pancakes and ended with movie marathons in the recliner. He supported his girls in all of their endeavors. He had tickets to every single musical recital or theatrical performance. He took the time to mail weekly hand-written letters to his daughters when they were away at college. Ben was passionate about instilling a strong sense of independence and encouraged his girls to always be their most authentic self. When the right partners came along, Ben welcomed his son-in-laws with open arms (after a series of personal questions!). To say he was proud would be the greatest understatement.
Ben was a loving uncle, cousin, and in-law to many. His friendships were important to him. He enjoyed Friday nights out with the gang for a Long Island Iced Tea (or two). To our surprise, he was also a loyal cat dad to sweet Nellie.
Ben's greatest joy, however, came from being a grandfather to Lily and Emma Becraft and Henry, Isabel, and Liam (Benjamin) Myers. His five favorite kids lovingly called him “Papa Poodle”. He embraced the role with enthusiasm and playfulness, filling his grandchildren's lives with love, snuggles, and silliness.
A celebration of Ben's life will be held at the 905 Room in Washington, IL on Saturday, October 21st from 1:30-3:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, Ben kindly requested donations to his grandchildren’s education savings in his memory, as he considered his grandkids to be his greatest legacy.
Ben’s family wishes to extend our gratitude to Toni Eckwood, Ben’s caregiver for the last two years, for her compassion, unwavering assistance, and friendship. The staff at Proctor Dialysis also went above and beyond over the last year. We also extend our sincere appreciation for the staff at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home for their support and care for our entire family in making Dad’s last chapter one of dignity and peace.
Ben’s motto through life was always “this too shall pass.” While Ben has passed on, his memory will continue to shine bright. As we say our goodbyes, let us remember Ben Perkins with the warmth of his laughter, the wisdom of his words, and the love he shared. He may have left this world, but his spirit remains in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
