Beatrice's obituary

Beatrice “Bea” “Beatie” Cozewith (née Edelman), 97, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at her home in Parkland, Florida. A beautiful and loving soul is the best way to describe this exceptional, kind, and generous matriarch. This combination was a rare gift. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Bea during her 97 years, among them: If you are walking with loved ones, and find yourself on opposite sides of a pole or barrier, you need to say “Bread and Butter” to ensure lifelong friendship. The concept derives from the difficulty of separating butter from bread once it has been spread. Like bread and butter, Bea cannot be “unbuttered” from her family, who she lived for. Above all, Bea was kind to everyone, and had a great story and superstition for everything.

Beatrice was the daughter of the late Abraham and Edith Edelman, sister of Marvin “Sonny” Edelman, Jack “Jackie” Edelman and Howard “Howie” Edelman. A truly devoted wife of an amazing 66 years to the late Arthur Cozewith, she was also a loving mother to Elaine and Alan Spitzer, Bruce and Carol Cozewith, and the late Susan Cozewith. Bea was also a beloved grandmother, adored by her ten grandchildren: Steven and Jennifer Spitzer, Sara and Kevin Deutsch, Lauren and Jeffrey Fischer, Stacey Cozewith and Jason Schneidkraut, and Linsey and Adam Kramen; eleven great-grandchildren: Jacob, Matthew, Brianna, Molly, Morgan, Alexandra, Shaun, Nathan, Andrew, Emily and Madison; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Bea grew up in Bayonne, New Jersey. In highschool, she was described as a tiny and lively lady that was a first-class “jitterbug” dancer. Bea went on to marry her sweetheart Arthur Cozewith, a World War II Army Veteran and former Prisoner of War, at the age of 22. Bea and Art loved to travel and eventually settled down in Pearl River, New York with their family. Bea’s love of reading brought her to become a librarian at the Pearl River Library for many years. She was known for reading four books at a time, with one in each room where she could “visit” each story there. There wasn’t a book she didn’t read from the New York Times Best Sellers List to “Snuggle Puppy” to her great grandchildren.

Bea was very involved in the Jewish community and served on various committees at the Nanuet Hebrew Center. An inspirational and generous woman who cherished her friends and family, loved life, and was truly loved by all, Bea was incredibly active throughout her lifetime.

Funeral services and interment will be held graveside at Beth-El Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey on Friday, September 3, at 11 a.m. The family will sit shiva outside at the home of Bruce and Carol Cozewith in Watchung, New Jersey.
