Batrick's obituary
Batrick Ann Ledie, (aka Bat Duffy) 41, of Dallas, TX, died on January 15, 2024 in his sleep as the result of an accidental drug overdose.
Born March 23, 1982, in Dallas, Tx to Beverly Ann and Michael Dodson, Bat went through life with quite a few names, as many do. But Bat was the name he chose, the name that suited him best, and the name he is best known by.
The youngest of 3 children, he was raised mostly by his mother, Beverly, an artist, chef, ballerina, and phenomenal human being in her own right. His upbringing was amongst what once was the eccentric community of East Dallas. He was raised by the gay community, the East Dallas Bitches, drag queens, musicians, artists, and an assortment of other weirdos and queerdos.
He attended Dallas Public schools and was an alumni of Lakewood Elementary, J.L. Long Middle School and most proudly Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he was in the Theater Magnet.
He was very fond of his time at "Arts Magnet." He made many lifelong friends there and it was the first time he felt some acceptance. Many a story was told about his time there traipsing through the halls as a goth "Spooky Kid." Just don't bring up Chuck Norris. Do ask to see his phenomenal Senior portrait.
To say Bat lived an interesting life would be an understatement and also not do him justice. Like most humans, he was complicated. An Aries, who in real life often exclaimed "Fight Me." He was loud, enthusiastic, and no shrinking violet. He wasn't "larger than life." He was life.
He loved music and spent so much time in the Deep Ellum of the 90's and early 2000's. Insomnia Coffee Bar, known as just Insomnia most of the time, being his main haunt. And then later on as a young adult, The Church.
He was on the Internet from early on and that's where he found a lot of the people and community that would carry him through life. Notable communities include alt.music.placebo, also known as AMP, Livejournal, and later on through Tumblr where he was known best. He went viral on Tumblr several times but it was the post about Audrey Hepburn that ended with "And history remembers her as pretty," that followed him the most.
It was through the community he built online that he learned most about himself. It's where he figured out not only did he have ADHD, but that he was autistic as well as the realization that he was trans and asexual. These revelations gave him an understanding that changed him deeply and informed how he treated himself and others. He was a big proponent of gassing yourself up, embodying the ego of Tony Stark and believing that you are truly the most magnificent person on Earth.
Bat could be fearless and had absolutely no shame. He made friends with Scott Putesky, the former guitarist for Marilyn Manson via Facebook Messenger and then later in real space/time. He once corresponded with Meatloaf about his high school yearbook picture. (He graduated from the same high school as Beverly.) And had a myriad of other odd celebrity encounters that both amused and surprised him.
He was spontaneous and chaotic. He often and openly gave into his impulses whether through tattoos, adopting cats, random adventures, or once by moving to bumfuck North Carolina for love.
Bat inspired people to live authentically as themselves because he truly knew no other way to exist. He was himself thoroughly, mess and all.
Bat really came into his own in his 30's through very difficult and painful life experiences. He had two marriages fail. Through a combination of mental health struggles and disability, he was no longer able to work a full-time job. He lost 2 houses, one through the 2008 recession and the other after providing full time in home hospice care to his mother until her death in 2017. He honored Beverly's wish to die in her home and the loss of his childhood home, in East Dallas, afterwards is something he never recovered from. The loss of that home led to many many years of housing instability and poverty which he was never able to climb out of.
In what would end up being his later years, he expressed a desire to convert to Judaism. His friends and family were able to make that happen for him upon his death.
He is survived by his partners Elim Henson and Eric Finger, wife, Shannon Duffy, and his chosen siblings Katy Krisak and Virginia Ayers.
While he didn't get to physically birth his own children, he was a parent. He was a step-parent to Evie, the daughter of Shannon Duffy. He left behind his two cats, Mara and Spooky. And he was Mama to many as well as Glamdad to one very special kid, Sage.
He also left behind many partners and former lovers across the world who miss and grieve him dearly.
He was cremated according to his wishes and a Memorial was held on May 25, 2024 at the home he shared with his dear friends Marie Camacho and Joe Rién.
May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
