What causes did Barbara care about most?

Our mom would help anyone in need if she could. We didn't have much money growing up, but Barbara would give you "the shirt off her back" - as the saying goes - so long as she felt you needed it. And she could be stubborn when it came to things she believed in. For example, there were quite a few years that my mother and grandmother would prepare a huge Thanksgiving meal. If anyone from our neighborhood didn't have family nearby or any place to go for the holiday, my mom insisted they come and eat with our family. And she wouldn't accept "no" for an answer. If someone wasn't going to stay for dinner, then they were expected to make a plate and take it home with them. And yet, she was never pushy; she just understood the needs of our friends and neighbors and knew exactly what to say to make sure they had a nice meal. Our mother had very clear instincts about right and wrong. And although she was always polite and respectful towards others, she had no problem speaking up and holding any person accountable for their actions, if she witnessed any injustice. And for a woman of such petite stature, Barbara was never intimidated or afraid to speak her mind when the situation called for it. She was quickest to defend and protect children, and advocated on their behalf whenever it was necessary.
