Barbara's obituary
Barbara was known to her community of Maywood, IL as Mrs. Perkins, the feisty but loved school teacher that you did not mess with. To her family and friends, she was the beloved mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin and family matriarch.
Born in Greenville, Texas to Ecta and Randall Raines, Barbara enjoyed feeling the sun on her bare feet and eating anything sweet. She was incredibly smart and giving. Her life was not always easy with many adversities, but in true fashion, she handled it all with grace and humility.
Barbara first became a mother in 1966 when she gave birth to her eldest daughter, Joi Raines. A few years later, she married her dear husband, llyis Mohammad whom she had 3 children with; Ypakka, Shoshonie and Apachi Perkins.
Though on paper Barbara had 4 children, she was a mother to so many others. A daughter in particular, Jalisa Raines, was raised, loved, and protected by Barbara from the time she was a little girl not old enough to even attend school. She also helped raise her other nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Mario, Jamar and Jasmine for many years of their lives. But that just shows the true testament of the selfless woman that she was. There was never a worry or doubt with her in your corner.
Barbara was always a teacher every moment of her life. She had lots of students in the classroom but was truly busy schooling her many, many grandchildren on life. She would drop those life lessons in a heartbeat, or correct your English if she heard you saying something the wrong way. She was a fighter up until her last moments and loved by so many.
Barbara loved music, dancing, plants/trees, sweets, her dogs, teaching, and most of all, her family. Unity and strength have always been the “Raines” way. In her memory, lets honor our beloved Barbara Raines/Perkins, a mother for many and a teacher to all.
