Jeanne's obituary

Loving mother/grandmother/aunt, Barbara "Jeanne" Mohundro, 91, passed away at Cornerstone Hospice on May 19, 2022 following a fall at home and surgery for a broken pelvis. Jeanne was surrounded by many loving family members in her last days of earthly life.

Jeanne, born to Chesterfield Simeon Peteet and Lucile Imogene Gathings Peteet on August 04, 1930 in Garrett, TX. She grew up in Dallas. A member of the church of Christ, Jeanne worshipped and fellowshipped alongside her family members at Dallas churches including the Sears and Summit and Highland Park churches of Christ. 

She met Lonnie Mohundro on a blind date, and they were married June 11, 1949. A n excellent typist, Jeanne was a secretary at insurance firms until children were born. During most of their marriage, Jeanne was a homemaker. Jeanne and Lon lived in Garland and the Oak Cliff area of Dallas until 1967 when their family moved to Burlington, MA with an “Exodus” church planting movement. In 1974, they moved to Lubbock, TX where Lon attended Sunset School of Preaching and Jeanne worked in the school’s administrative office. 

After completing studies at SSOP, Lon served as minister for churches in Bridgewater, NJ, Selingsgrove, PA, and West Chester, PA. Jeanne was an active supporter of Lon’s ministerial work and both were much loved in the churches they served. Following Lon’s retirement, the couple moved to New Jersey, then to Charlotte, NC where they worshipped and served in the Mt. Island church of Christ. Lon passed from this life in 2009. Jeanne moved to Tavares, FL in 2019. 

An excellent typist, Jeanne worked on several occasions as a secretary. She developed her talents in oil painting, china painting, and various forms of stitchery. She made three trips to Vienna, Austria and Prague, Czech Republic to help university students improve their English. After Lon’s death, she learned tax preparation and worked for HR Block for several years. In recent years, Jeanne was diligent in creating personalized cards which she mailed to members of her current and previous church families. She headed up the Grief booklets mailing ministry for the Mount Dora church and taught English using the Bible to students in other nations through the World English Institute.

Jeanne is predeceased by her beloved husband Lon Mohundro; her parents, Chester and Lucile Peteet; sister and brother-in-law Patricia and William Lybrand; and grandson, James William Mohundro, Jr. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Robert Bliss (Eustis, FL); son and daughter-in-law, James, Sr and Diane Mohundro (Huntersville, NC); granddaughter Lisa Leichner (Dan)(Christiansburg, VA); granddaughter, Jamie Byers (Chris)(Cincinnati, OH): granddaughter Loni Jeann Bliss (Eustis, FL); grandson Trey Bliss (Tevis)(Brooklyn, NY), great-grandchildren Nathaniel, Jeremy, and Derek Leichner, Penelope and Benjamin Byers, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
