Barbara's obituary

Barbara Ann Larsen passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, at home with her two sons by her side.

She was a loving mother to Paul (Katy) and Carl; a devoted sister to Susan Bouquet, Mary Greseth, and Elizabeth Hannon; a cherished grandmother to Nash; and a beloved aunt to eight nephews and one niece.

Barbara graduated from Mayo High School in 1973. She went on to attend Luther College and later earned her masters degree from the University of Minnesota. For over 25 years, she pursued a distinguished career as a medical librarian at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, where she was instrumental in supporting important medical research. Meanwhile, she balanced her career with raising a family in Eagan, Minnesota.

Barbara was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. After surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, she was thought to be in the clear. With a deep interest in medical research and a desire to help others, she enrolled in a research study in 2020 aimed at detecting breast cancer earlier than traditional screening mammograms. A positive blood test led to further scans, showing recurring cancer.

Even after retiring from the VA, and while fighting cancer, Barbara worked part-time at the Plummer Library at Mayo Clinic until September of 2025. She loved helping medical students and staff further their education. Many who crossed her path never knew the battle she was fighting, as she always greeted everyone with a warm smile and was so generous with her time.

Outside of her work, Barbara loved to read and was a frequent visitor of the Rochester Public Library. She enjoyed spending time with her family and organizing golf events that brought everyone together. She frequently walked her son Paul’s dog when he was away and loved to play with her grandson Nash. Barbara held her two sons at the center of her life, always supporting them as they pursued additional professional degrees and grew in their adult lives.

Barbara was committed to advancing medical education and research throughout her life and will continue to do so after her passing. She made the decision to donate her body to Mayo Clinic.

A Celebration of Life for Barbara Ann Larsen will be held on January 10, 2025, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., at Somerby Golf Club in Byron, Minnesota. 975 Somerby Parkway Northeast, Byron, MN 55920 (This will be casual with appetizers and drinks. No formal wear needed.)

Note from Paul & Carl:

We want to thank all of her family and friends that helped make her final days with us as happy and comfortable as possible. She never had to be alone and we were able to honor her wishes because of you.
