Barbara's obituary
Barbara Jane Buck (Lorentz), age 83, of Hastings, MN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, in the presence of loved ones after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt and will be missed in many ways by many people.
Barbara was born September 16, 1942, in Hastings, MN to Nicholas A. Lorentz and Veronica A. Lorentz (Gores) of New Trier, MN. She is survived by her sister Jean Larson (Ronald), her sons Robert (Brenda) and Daniel, and grandchildren Graydon, Addie, and Nadia. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Donald (Bernadette), John (Rosemary), Clyde (Eileen), Gerald (Caroline), Kenneth (Mary), sisters Mary Magnusson (Andy) and Viola Larson, and many dear friends.
Barbara was a real “people person.” She could strike up a conversation with anyone, about anything at any time. She was an empathetic listener but was also very quick-witted and never afraid to offer her opinion. You always knew where you stood with Barbara! These qualities served her very well in her work life, especially in her many years as a waitress at the Mississippi Belle on 2nd St., where she built lasting relationships and friendships with both customers and coworkers. Barbara treated everyone with the same dignity and respect regardless and therefore was quick to earn the respect of others.
Barbara deeply enjoyed extremely long phone conversations, especially with her sister Jean. The life of the phone battery dictated the length of the conversation! She paid very close attention to current events, particularly politics on all levels, and could speak knowledgeably to most any issue confronting society today. Her recall of names, places, and events was remarkable! Barbara also deeply enjoyed reminiscing about simpler times, most notably those growing up on a farm in New Trier, MN. She was a great storyteller and always had details and anecdotal items to add to your stories.
Barbara was very generous, and this generosity prevailed to the end, as she donated her body to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program, where she will leave a legacy supporting medical research and education.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Anatomy Bequest Program, 3-102 NHH, 312 Church St. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455 or online at https://give.umn.edu/giving/t…
Information for her celebration of life will be shared later. Thank you to everyone for your love and support during this difficult time!
