Barbara's obituary
Barbara Hinkle Williams, age 83, passed away on November 2, 2025 at her home in Norfolk, Virginia. She passed in comfort, surrounded by her devoted husband and children. A memorial service will be held on September 2, 2026, at a location to be determined.
Barbara was born in Lewisburg, PA. She spent her childhood in the area, including living for a while on the campus of Little League Baseball in Williamsport.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 34 years Jim Williams, brothers Thomas Hinkle (Suzie) and Scot Hinkle (Dawn), daughter Amy Rhone Quitt (Dan), son Steve Rhone (Kay), grandchildren Grayson Testino, Samantha Thompson, and Megan Costa, as well as great-grandchildren Stella Thompson and Vivian Thompson.
Barbara retired from Lucent Technologies in 2001. She was the business development manager for Central and Latin America, and maintained offices in Atlanta, Miami and Sao Paulo.
Barbara had a very outgoing personality and made friends easily. She had a natural talent for negotiation, and was a formidable party when contract terms and conditions were being finalized.
After retiring, Barbara discovered a passion for painting, studying under Charles Kello and Nancy Dooley, two of Tidewater’s best art instructors. She loved sailing, especially bare boat chartering in the Virgin Islands, as well as racing on her family’s sailboat "Checks in the Mail."
