Barbara's obituary
Barbara Ann Englert lived a life defined by laughter you could hear across a room and love you could feel long after you left it.
She passed away on March 31, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of joy, resilience, and unwavering presence. She was 81.
Born on August 1, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Barbara grew up in the Holy Cross neighborhood alongside her rambunctious siblings, a time that helped shape her spirited personality and enduring sense of humor. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1962 and went on to build a long and successful career as a bookkeeper, known for her dedication and strong work ethic.
In 1978, Barbara married her husband, Raymond, and soon welcomed her daughter, Dorene—one of the greatest joys of her life. In later years, she made her home with Dorene, her son-in-law David, and the light of her life, her grandson Connor, whom she adored deeply.
Barbara was someone you felt before you even saw her—especially her laughter. It was unmistakable, joyful, and contagious. She loved the theater, and actors could often hear her laughter from the stage, always delighted to know she was in the audience. She had a gift for making people feel at home. Whether hosting card games, movie nights, or shared meals, Barbara created spaces where everyone felt welcome. Many of her daughter’s friends found themselves lovingly “adopted” into her extended family.
She loved intently and lived bravely. In her early twenties, Barbara traveled alone to Ireland—an uncommon and courageous journey that reflected her independent spirit. She carried that love of adventure throughout her life, traveling often and generously sharing those experiences with others. In her younger years, she took her mother on many trips, creating lasting memories together. In her seventies, she traveled with her daughter to Italy and the Vatican, continuing to embrace the world with curiosity and joy.
Barbara understood that the greatest gift she could give was her presence—and she gave it freely. She showed up in life’s biggest moments and its quietest ones, offering steady love, humor, and comfort to all who knew her.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Dorene Ocamb (David); her stepchildren, Laura White (Phil), Martha Mathis (Chris), and Steve Englert (Debbie); her sister, Kathleen Dishman; her beloved grandson, Connor; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary (Lahey) Kelley and Wilfrid T. Kelley; her brothers, Richard and Joe; and her sister, Rosie.
Barbara’s life was a reminder that love is best expressed in presence, laughter, and the courage to fully live. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Faith in Action of Georgetown, Texas. During her time in Texas, their volunteers provided Barbara with transportation to medical appointments—a simple act of kindness that meant the world to her. Supporting their work is a meaningful way to honor her life and help others receive the same care and compassion she did.
