Barbara's obituary

Barbara Anne Baxley, 77, a former business owner, local political activist, and loving mother died on July 1, 2018, after having been diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer in the weeks prior. She passed away peacefully in her room at the CareOne nursing home in Peabody, Massachusetts during the night in comfort.

Born in Salisbury, North Carolina as an only child, she was raised and educated in North Carolina; moving to Massachusetts in 1970 and settling in Nahant on the North Shore and then subsequently Weymouth on the South Shore.

Prior to her retirement, Barbara was a successful businesswoman having owned and operated multiple companies in the Boston area, managing data systems in three dozen locally well-known companies such as the 99 Restaurants and all of Mr. Athanas's establishments such as Anthony's Pier 4. She subsequently started and ran a successful dry cleaning business throughout the late 80's and 90's.

During her time in Weymouth, Barbara was a two-time candidate for Selectman and an active Town Meeting member. She was elected to the Charter Commission in 1997, for a two-year study of town government, which resulted in a new Town Charter and the formation of a Mayoral/Council form of government that transitioned Weymouth from a town-based to a city-based form of government in the year 2000. In her later years, she remained an activist of sorts, advocating for the senior community and spent her spare time organizing and maintaining a community for her high school class reunion for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Sherry L. Armstrong-Morris of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and her son, Michael Patrick Scanlan of Nahant, Massachusetts, as well as her three granddaughters, Danielle Morris, Kimberly Morris, and Stephanie Morris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to C Three Foundation are welcomed. C Three Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, plays a vital role in spreading knowledge about The Sinclair Method (TSM), a revolutionary new treatment for alcoholism that uses a medication and science-based approach to treat alcohol use disorder. It saved the life of her Son, Michael.
