Audrey's obituary

Audrey Mariah Jingbo Roberts was born on July 16, 2000, in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China, and passed away on December 30, 2024, in Denver, Colorado. Her life was a vibrant tapestry of curiosity, creativity, and compassion that touched the hearts of everyone who knew her.

At just 13 months old, Audrey came to the United States, where she developed a profound interest in her birth country. She immersed herself in Chinese culture from an early age, attending Chinese school for language and dance classes and continuing her studies through college. Fluent in reading and writing Mandarin, she earned certification as proficient by the Chinese government. In the summer of 2018, Audrey participated in the State Department’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), spending time in Taiwan to deepen her knowledge of Mandarin.

Audrey's love of learning was evident from a young age. By the age of four, she had already developed a passion for books—a passion that only grew stronger with time. Her voracious appetite for reading spanned countless genres and subjects, from forensic sciences to horror novels. This insatiable curiosity fueled her ability to engage meaningfully with anyone on a wide range of topics.

Her creative talents were equally remarkable. Audrey taught herself Amigurumi—the art of crocheting animals—and delighted friends and family with handmade Pokémon-themed creations. She loved drawing and could often be found sketching or writing stories, poetry, and essays. Always eager to learn new skills, she even mastered bookbinding and gifted her family and friends with beautiful handmade books. Audrey also had a flair for cooking and enjoyed experimenting with new recipes to share with loved ones.

Audrey approached life with determination and a competitive spirit. She began piano lessons at age six and took up viola in fourth grade, performing in recitals, chamber orchestra, and as part of a quartet. Her adventurous nature led her to explore activities like archery and rock climbing starting in elementary school—pursuits she continued throughout her life. In junior high school, she joined the cross-country team and supported the drama department as part of its technical crew.

At Douglas County High School in Colorado, Audrey excelled academically while embracing leadership roles. As a participant in the rigorous International Baccalaureate program, she earned an IB diploma while maintaining an extraordinary GPA of 4.42—graduating fourth out of a class of 409 students in 2018. She also served as a captain of the Speech and Debate club, where she particularly enjoyed extemporaneous speaking on current events.

Audrey’s academic achievements earned her a full scholarship to Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, China—a joint program between Duke University and its partner institution abroad—where she majored in molecular biology. Her senior research project was so exceptional that it was submitted by her professor for publication in the *Journal of Nutrition Science and Research*, earning Audrey co-author credit. She graduated with dual degrees from both Duke Kunshan University and Duke University in May 2023.

Outside academia, Audrey cherished road trips and exploring new places with an adventurous spirit that matched her intellectual pursuits. Most recently living in Denver, Colorado, she worked as a server at several restaurants while continuing to bring joy into the lives of those around her.

Audrey held deep love for her family and friends—a love they will always remember through countless cherished memories. As both an older sister and later a middle sister within her family dynamic, Audrey embraced these roles wholeheartedly. Those closest to her recall not only her giving heart but also her infectious laugh—a laugh so joyful it compelled everyone around her to join in.

She is survived by her parents Roger Roberts and Lori Turner; stepfather David Turner; siblings; and many other family members who will forever hold her memory close.
