Atiba's obituary
Atiba Steve Alexander Theophille was born on January 11, 1984, in Trinidad & Tobago to Morris and Joan Theophille, and spent his early years grounded in family, learning, and faith. After completing his primary education in Trinidad, he continued his schooling in Venezuela before ultimately making his home in the United States, where his adult life unfolded in education, community, and joy. He passed away on the morning of Saturday, December 13, 2025.
Atiba lived with depth and intention. Early in his life, he spent time discerning monastic life, drawn to its discipline, reflection, and seriousness of purpose. Though his path ultimately led beyond the monastery, that formation remained with him, shaping the way he listened, the way he held silence, and the reverence with which he approached the world and the people in it.
Teaching became the place where his gifts found their fullest expression. Beginning in 2008 at St. Joseph High School in Brooklyn, "Theo" devoted himself to language and young people, eventually serving as Chair of the English Department. Across classrooms and leadership roles, he was known as a firm and gifted educator who held high expectations and met them with warmth, humor, and deep belief in his students. Music was another language he loved, especially playing the guitar, where rhythm and meaning found each other again.
Atiba now rests in the presence of his father, Morris, and his brother, Dexter, who preceded him in death. He is lovingly survived by his mother, Joan; his sister, Maxine; his nieces and nephews; his aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a wide community of friends, colleagues, and former students whose lives are forever marked by his presence.
May his laughter echo. May his love remain. May his memory be a blessing.
