Ashok's obituary

Ashok “Victor” Vora of Brooklyn, New York, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 5, 2023. He had celebrated his 75th birthday in August 2022, with hundreds of friends and family members. Born in 1947 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, Ashok is the second son of eight children born to the late Shantilal and Anjwali Vora.

Ashok emigrated to the United States in the early 1970s and established himself in Brooklyn. Ever the entrepreneur, he grew a family business of Cards and Gifts shops and paved the way for his siblings to grow their own families and businesses in the United States. He married his beloved wife Pratima in 1981 and they built a life with their two sons, Anand and Alap.

A leader in his community, Ashok was an exemplary figure to all who knew and loved him. Often spotted in his signature Ray-Bans, the industrious patriarch recently ventured into the restaurant business and was yet to retire at the time of his passing. He masterfully blended American values with his Indian roots in all he did, including supporting newly arrived immigrants, whether they were friends or strangers, to help establish themselves in the United States.

Ashok was quick to make lifetime connections with all who crossed his path, leaving an indelible mark on loved ones from all over the world. His pride in his family was evident, and he was happiest when surrounded by his extensive network of siblings, children, nieces, nephews and in recent years, his grandchildren. Friends and family from numerous countries spanning multiple generations made the journey to visit him over the last several months, evidencing his profound impact on his peers.

Ashok will be loved and missed for his charm, generosity, and steadfast leadership. He is survived by his wife Pratima; sons Anand and Alap; daughter-in-law Prachi; grandchildren Asha and Aviraj; Vora brothers and sister - Arvind (Ila), late Ajit (Usha), Arun (Rita), Nita Doshi (late Dattu), Atul (late Dipti), Anil (Bina), and Anant (Dipti); Shah family - sister-in-law Bharti Mehta (Vaman); brothers-in-law late Devendra (Pallavi), Hemant (Ila), Ashwin (Rama); and numerous adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.
