Arthur's obituary
Art was born on April 15, 1927 in Nutley, NJ. The only child of Arthur and Margaret (Mullany) Henahan, he was educated at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, NY and at The Manlius School in Manlius, NY. Following graduation, he inducted into the US Army on V-J Day in 1945. He was deployed to France, where he served as Staff Sergeant to the 1674th Engineer Utility Detachment in Reims. Following his discharge in 1947, he attended Syracuse University on the G.I. Bill. He worked in Real Estate until joining IBM as a salesman in 1961, where he met his future wife, Ruth Lynch. They married on July 6, 1963 and had four children, settling in Delmar, NY after short stints in Falls Church, VA and West Hartford, CT.
Art held a series of sales positions and eventually became a financial planner, working for the First Albany Corporation from 1979 until his retirement in 1990. During retirement, he served as a volunteer for Bethlehem Senior Services, regularly driving local seniors to appointments while still finding time to stop for lunch at My Place and Co. several times per week. Upon Ruth’s retirement in 2002, they moved from Delmar to Salem, SC, where they were members of the Keowee Sailing Club and made many good friends. In early 2018, they relocated to Charlottesville to be closer to their devoted daughter, Kathleen.
Art will be remembered for his Irish wit, charm and love of good banter, as well as for his lifelong faith. During his long bachelor years, he sailed summers on Skaneateles and Cazenovia Lakes, and was a member of the Ski Patrol through the winter months at Snow Ridge in Turin, NY. He continued his passion for sailing with family, though it often took a backseat to his duties ‘chief transportation officer’ to his kids’ many swim meets. In 2013, on their 50th wedding anniversary, he and Ruth renewed their marital vows, surrounded by the family that has always been the center of their lives. He spent his last days comfortably at home with the support of hospice, his wife and children.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Margaret Henahan, as well as by his surrogate family: Phillip and Agnes Brady, and their children Phil Jr., Nick, Helen and Renie.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Lynch Henahan; his children J (Natasha Cejudo) Henahan, John (Lisa) Henahan, Kathleen Henahan, and Pat Henahan; and his grandchildren: Owen and Liam Henahan, and Ava, Maggie and Cesar Gallagher. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Mary Ann Clune and nieces Debbie O’Leary, Beth Hawkins and Katie Clune.
A funeral mass will be held on August 31st at 6:30 PM at Holy Comforter Catholic Church in Charlottesville, VA. He will be buried with military honors at the Culpepper National Cemetery in Culpepper, VA on Monday, September 2nd at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Hospice of the Piedmont or All Blessings Flow, both of Charlottesville, VA.
