My Friday Nonsense email for Gene Burns was returned this morning as undeliverable. I asked Q. Gregory who apparently asked Joe Hawkins who produced Gene's obituary. Thanks, Joe.

3 stories - In 1962 Gene gave me a ride home on his way to Riverside after spring semester at Cal. We drove into our ranch in Dunlap about 5:30 am. There were 3 horses in the truck. My father said “Stow your stuff and change; I’ll catch you a horse”. I said that I was going to bed. Gene said “Have a fun summer” and fled.

In December1963, I got out of Engineer Officer Basic at Ft Belvoir and Gene out of Platoon Leader Course at Quantico. We drove my VW bug to LA in 72 hours non-stop with my wife sitting shotgun and keeping the current driver awake while the off-duty Lt. slept in the back seat. All our stuff was in a rack on top. In north Texas at night we were coming to the end of hours of icy road and the VW swapped ends. Gene tried keeping it in the lane while looking in the rear view mirror but it spun again, hit a dry patch and tuned over on it’s side. Ever the smart-ass, I said: “ Jesus Christ, Gene, if you wanted me to drive all you had to do was ask." A Cadillac stopped and 4 Texans with boots, hats etc stepped out: “Need any hep?” We got the VW upright, pulled the fender out away from the tire, put the luggage back on top and went to LA.

After 57 years, I was headed for Oceanside to finally visit them as I was returning to Norcal from Phoenix where spring training had just been interrupted by COVID. I called to check and he said Willa was sick and I better not come. Morale: Don’t wait so damn long to visit old friends.

I will miss you, Cousin Gene. I adored you when I was small, with a hero worship. As I grew older, I came to appreciate your steadfastness, clarity of thought, and compassion.
Much love to Willa and the family.

Willa and I go back many years. We met in 4th grade and have been in touch ever since. My favorite memory was our girls get away to Washington during the world Fair. Our husbands-to-be were both doing military service while Willa and I had a last fling. We double dated and both married our college sweet-hearts. We were so lucky to choose wonderful spouses and have long, happy marriages. Now we have both lost the love of our lives but have many happy memories. Willa, I know how much you will miss Gene, but you are strong and will learn to live with the loving memories.
As college freshmen at CAL, Willa and I became roommates living in the tiny 4 girl room pledge porch - wall to wall beds, clothes down the hall. That is where I heard dreamy-eyed Willa tell her roommates about this cool guy - Gene. Clearly, it was love at first sight . It was no surprise when the engagement and marriage took place, followed by life as a military family.
Fast forward several decades to a trip Jerry and I took to Baja. As I entered the restroom in a quaint roadside stop, a voice said - “Mary Fran?” I tuned to look and there was Willla! Imagine Gene’s and Jerry’s surprise as we walked out of that restroom together.
Our friendship grew as we took many fun trips to the Burns home in Baja where we enjoyed that beautiful setting and the Burns gracious hospitality .
Now Willa and I find our friendship continuing as San Diego area residents, a friendship that began on the pledge porch at CAL. It is a small world after all.
My husband Vince and I wish we could be in California to attend. We would like to wish our deepest condolences to the entire Burns family. I grew up next store to The Burns Family in Oceanside. Mr. Burns made a lasting impression on me during those years. A couple memories I have of him included encouraging me to reel in my first fish, mending my knee after a fall including telling me no stitches needed (thankfully) and including me on a family trip to Baja California. I am grateful that I was able to see him and Mrs. Burns during my brothers wedding. It had far too long since I had seen them. Sending all of my and our love. He will be missed - Susan

I first met Gene at a Chi Phi fraternity party as a freshman in Fall 1960. My date that night was a good friend of Gene’s. A few days later, Gene asked my date if I would “fix him up” with one of my Alpha Phi sorority sisters. My first thought was Willa. That weekend she went with Gene to a Chi Phi party. I’ll never forget how happy and excited she was when she got back home. I think it was love at first sight.
Over the years I have remained good friends with Willa and Gene, visiting them in Mexico many times. I will miss Gene and send healing wishes to Willa and family.
