I will be forever grateful to Art for everything he did for our son, Henry. Henry started going across the street to see him for math enrichment in 2nd grade. That turned into Art providing Henry's full school math program and then assisting with his online math classes before high school. He once told him that, "I want you to be able to fall down the stairs in the middle of the night, pop up, and recite the quadratic equation." After Art and Joyce moved to Florida, I copied and mailed him the 20 pages of math problems Henry did to apply for a special summer math program. When I called to ask him if he got it, he told me, "I can see from this that Henry has found the joy in math." It was Art who opened the door to that joy and we will always love him for that.
As a newbie in HR at HP, I needed a first assignment as a liaison on my career path to be an HR manager. My boss at the time asked Art if I could be assigned to him. Graciously, Art said he would -knowing he’d be more of a coach to me than I’d ever be to him! I was always grateful for that opportunity and went on to a have a successful career with HP. I never forgot his kindness and generosity! This rookie will remember Art’s influence always.

I am Lynn Darbie, Art's daughter-in-law married to Tom (not Lynn Darbie, Art's daughter). I remember how Art like to drive and long-distances didn't phase him. One time he called us and said he had a business trip in the neighborhood of Cincinnati and he wanted to come visit his grandchildren. It turned out that his business trip was in Kansas City ! Only Art would consider Kansas City in the neighborhood of Cincinnati. He did drive to see us, stayed for a few hours and started back to Kansas City, despite our offer to stay for the night. We all enjoyed his visit.

Art was a wonderful Granddad, and even though we didn't live close by, he found ways for us to connect. On vacations, he would always bring a seemingly impossible math problem for us to puzzle over for the week. When I was becoming more serious about the French horn in high school, he sent me a whole collection of CDs of classical music, especially French horn pieces, and a handwritten explanation of each one. His passions for math, science, and music were inspiring, and he shared them generously. I am grateful that I was able to introduce his great-grandsons Oscar, Edward, and Arthur to him.
