Butch's obituary
In loving memory of Arnold (Butch) Portsmouth, a cherished father, devoted husband, and beloved friend. Butch passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC, surrounded by his loving wife and three daughters, on April 17, 2024, at the age of 75. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering strength.
Butch's journey began on March 2, 1949, in Fairview, Alberta, where he was raised by his beloved parents, James and Lillian Portsmouth. He earned the nickname "Butch" from his Auntie Vi, who felt that "Arnold" wasn't quite fitting for a young child. Though his family didn't have much, their home was always filled with music. As a young adult, Butch drove the school bus and was known for his daring spirit, even spotted drag racing down main street Worsley.
At the age of 19, Butch met the love of his life, Fern, at Worsley Central High School, where he stayed an extra two years 'to play basketball.' Their connection was immediate, often seen cruising around in Butch’s yellow Pontiac. On August 11, 1973, in Cherry Point, AB, they embarked on a journey of love and partnership that would span over five decades.
Butch attended SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) and later founded Keytop Business Systems, which eventually evolved into Hi-Tech Business Systems. Within Hi-Tech, Butch was admired as a respected leader, known for his readiness for those Northern Alberta winter road trips. His dedication and mentorship endeared him to his colleagues, and even after retiring in 2017, Butch remained a beloved member of the Hi-Tech family.
Throughout the years, Butch and Fern's love remained steadfast as they nurtured their family of three girls and built a life in Sexsmith Alberta, filled with joy, laughter, and cherished memories. In the early 2000s, they returned to Grande Prairie before retiring in Kelowna in 2017. Butch and Fern found their retirement home in Meadowbrook Estates, where they were embraced by a wonderful community of friends.
Butch was a man of many talents, known for his infectious smile, his unwavering love and commitment to his family, and his remarkable musical abilities. He was a self-taught musician, entertaining countless individuals with his singing and guitar playing. During Covid, he created a youtube channel “Friday’s with Butch”, bringing joy to all who had the pleasure of listening. Butch held a deep affection for classic Western films and the timeless melodies of country music. He maintained a lengthy list of songs he aspired to master on the guitar.
Butch held family at the core of his being. As both a father and grandfather, Butch served as a steadfast beacon of guidance, encouragement, and affection. He found immense joy in witnessing his grandchildren excel in their pursuits, whether on the baseball diamond, hockey rink, or cheerleading mat. Butch's legacy will live on through them and the values he instilled.
Butch was preceded in death by his cherished father, James; his beloved mother, Lillian; his sisters Sylvia (Leonard) and Irene; and his brothers Bill (Vickie) and Bob (Brenda). He is survived by his devoted wife Fern; his daughters Sheri (Corey), Keely (Kevin), and Kristina; his brother Jim (Helen); his grandchildren Caisen, Danity, Kaius, and Keaton (Justin); along with numerous other beloved relatives and cherished friends.
A celebration of Butch's life will be held on May 3, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Revelry Food+Music Hub in Kelowna, BC. Parking is available across the street in the Kelowna library parkade. In lieu of flowers, condolence donations may be provided to a Memorial Fund, established by his daughters.
Butch's absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, yet the enduring legacy of his love, music, and compassion will forever impact the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him.
