Armed's obituary
Armed “Larry” Wertheim, 80, passed away on September 21, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on May 5, 1945, in Marfa, Texas, Larry lived a full and meaningful life devoted to his family, his country, and the pursuits that brought him joy.
Larry proudly served in the United States Army, including wartime service in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. His commitment to service and sense of duty stayed with him long after his military career ended. He felt a deep connection to the land and found great joy in flintknapping, shaping arrowheads from flint, obsidian, and other stones—each piece reflecting his patience, skill, and respect for history.
He also had a deep compassion for animals, especially cats. Larry spent countless hours rescuing feral cats through trap-and-release efforts and often gave many a permanent home. His quiet generosity and kindness were hallmarks of his character.
Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Georgeanne Wertheim, and his parents, Armand and Mary Wertheim. He is lovingly remembered by his children Arron Wertheim; Avery Wertheim; Aria Woodcoff and her husband, Douglas Woodcoff; and Autry Wertheim and his wife, Laura Wertheim; his grandchildren, Leela and Luke Wertheim; and his sister, Linda Morris, and her husband, Scott Morris.
Larry’s final wish was for his ashes to be spread in Marfa at the former site of the Marfa Army Air Field. With the generous support of the staff at the Chinati Foundation, now located on that site, his family was able to honor his wish.
To honor Larry’s big heart and his lifelong love for every stray that crossed his path, the family invites you to consider supporting your local animal shelter or rescue organization in his memory.
