Arlene's obituary
In Memory of Arlene Dawn Zick - contributing author Jeanene Childers
Arlene Dawn Manchester Zick, born November 12, 1939, passed away the evening of March 12, 2022, at her home in Parker, Colorado.
Arlene was born to Gwen and Donald Manchester in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Arlene was born with an unquenchable desire to see the world and become friends with all she met. She never met a stranger! She could stand in a grocery store line and come out with three new friends. An avid learner and reader she became an American with more knowledge of her new country than most born on its soil. Arlene was a fearless skier, great bowler, serious golfer, lover of all music, and a great friend with whom to share any and all of the above – as well as her travels. She was an active member of the Cancer League of Colorado, a non-profit charity whose goal is to hopefully abolish cancer.
Although Arlene did little or no cooking as one of four roommates sharing an apartment in her younger days, she did share treat bags of leftovers from her many dates. Alas, later, with three children and a hungry hubby she learned to cook – GOURMET! And was an excellent chef the rest of her life.
Arlene’s desire to travel the world came to fruition in 1961. As a roommate of four, she encouraged each to take extra jobs and save for the first leg of their trip “around the world.” They traded the luxurious apartment with pool for a three-story walk-up to lower expenses and expedite their journey. Dean Zick proposed to Arlene many times to no avail. She was determined to see the world! But he was determined to have her as his bride! So enamored with Arlene was Dean, that he offered to pay her way to Europe IF when she returned, she’d pay him back – or marry him! Arlene, after thinking it over for two weeks, decided it was a pretty fair deal and agreed to the arrangement.
Thanksgiving Day 1962, Dean and Arlene were married. It turned out to carry with it, so much more to be thankful for than one would have dreamed – a real “win-win” happy story. Dean and Arlene had three beautiful children together of whom they were both so proud. Dean continued to take Arlene to exciting parts of the world to make her dreams come true! They purchased and restored a 1933 lodge on the 50’ sandy beach of Grand Lake. Every nook and cranny of the three-story Lake Haven Lodge is filled with memories for ALL! Home away from home for family and friends!
Arlene was the appreciated and adored wife of Dean Zick, a loving and loved sister, mother of Karen (David) Tinnes, Shelley (Mike Dwyer) Heckendorf, and Greg Zick, grandmother to 8, and great grandmother and friend to countless numbers. She was preceded in death by her best friend/husband of 56 years, her parents, two brothers, first granddaughter, Jackie Tinnes, and son in law, Jim Heckendorf.
