Arlene's obituary

With sad hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Arlene Novales (née Young) on November 26, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Berwick, Nova Scotia, Arlene was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Gertrude (Dugas) Young. She grew up in Woodville, Kings County, Nova Scotia, where she developed a strong sense of independence and determination that would guide her throughout her life.

Arlene left home to study and work in Halifax before moving to Toronto, where she pursued her education in medical record librarianship. She went on to build a successful and respected career in health records administration. At a remarkably young age, Arlene became Director of Medical Records at Doctor’s Hospital in Toronto. She later worked at several Toronto-area hospitals, concluding her professional career at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, where she eventually retired.

In retirement, Arlene embraced her lifelong love of learning and creativity. An avid reader, she found great pleasure in books and valued the quiet reflection they brought to her days. She also pursued her love of art, joining an art class at her local community centre, where she found joy, creativity, and a welcoming community of fellow artists. Encouraged by her peers, she joined the Art Guild, further developing her skills and deepening her passion for painting.

Arlene cherished her close relationships with friends and family and was happiest when surrounded by those she loved. She took great joy in time spent together, especially when it included music, good food, conversation, and laughter—simple pleasures that meant everything to her.

Arlene is survived by her loving children, Marcus  and Elizabeth (Mark Lalonde); her cherished grandchildren, Aidan and Olivia; her sister, Joyce Lata; and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Fredrick (Jr.) Young.

The family is deeply grateful to the health care team and staff at the Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence, Scarborough, for the kindness, care, and compassion shown to Arlene.

Cremation has taken place, with a private niche-side celebration of life to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Arlene may be made to Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest. Online donations can be made at

Arlene will be remembered for her quiet strength, intellectual curiosity, and creative spirit, and for the deep, unwavering love she shared with her family and friends. Her loss is felt beyond words, and she will be forever missed, cherished, and remembered with love.
