Anton's obituary

Anton Zimmerman (November 25, 1959 - January 22, 2026)

Anton Laurence Zimmerman was born in Ilford, Essex, London, England on November 25th, 1959, the first child of Avril and Arnold Zimmerman. A few years later in 1962, his only sibling, Ray Zimmerman, was born and the brothers maintained a loving friendship throughout their lives.

After Avril and Arnold moved to Maida Vale, a posh part of Central London, Anton attended Robinsfield Elementary School and then Barrow Hill Junior School in St. John’s Wood. Another move to Edgware, a suburb of Central London, saw Anton and Ray attending local schools. Anton distinguished himself as a junior high student by winning a school prize for writing a detective story.

In 1972, Anton was accepted by the City of London School for Boys in Blackfriars, London. As a high school student at CLS, he participated in the school’s military cadet force and became captain of the school's basketball team for a year.

While he was in high school, he developed a lifelong passion for rock music, especially guitar heroes such as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Rory Gallagher, Duane Allman, Frank Marino, Steve Hillage, and Todd Rundgren.

Graduating from CLS in 1976, he spent three months visiting with his uncle Gerald Charles in Durban, South Africa, before attending Sussex University near the seaside resort of Brighton in South East England in 1978 and graduating with a B.Sc. Honors in Biochemistry in 1981. During this time he made many friends and worked at the Student Center helping to set up for famous bands that he loved.

After moving back to London in 1981, he worked as a filing clerk at times before moving to Dallas, TX in 1988. In 1991, he completed a Master’s in Molecular Biology at the University of Texas at Dallas.

He worked for a time at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas before moving to Austin, TX and working as a scientist for Ambion and later Applied Biosystems from 1996 to 2007. According to colleagues posting endorsements on LinkedIn, he was very professional, knowledgeable, well-trained, well-liked, highly regarded, and a delight to work with.

During his time in Dallas, he married Beverly Petmecky and had a daughter, Ally, in 1990 before divorcing within a few years. Sadly, Beverly passed away in 1999. Ally moved in with Anton and his wife, Debbie, and they raised her together in Austin, TX. Anton described Debbie as the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and was proud of her accomplishments first as a college student and later as a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist.

Anton’s son, Harrison Taylor-Zimmerman, moved in with the family in 2000, and they shared custody with his mom, Jessica Taylor, until his untimely accidental death in 2016. When Anton’s father, Arnold Zimmerman, passed away in 2007, Anton and Debbie welcomed Anton’s mom, Avril Zimmerman, into the family home where they took care of her until she passed away in 2023. Anton would often say that taking care of his mom was a spiritual experience that made him feel fulfilled, happy, and good about himself.

The birth of Anton’s grandson, Jack Mansfield, in 2011 was a profoundly moving experience for Anton, and his years since then were marked by great love and pleasure at watching Jack grow and develop into a smart, funny, and talented youth and seeing Ally become a wonderful mom.

Anton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend who showed his love through words of affirmation for all. He always made sure to say “I love you” before leaving the house or ending a call. He adored his family and delighted in their accomplishments. He loved to share his latest music obsessions and political insights with anyone who showed an interest and loved to reminisce about his life, much of which he viewed as an adventure. His gentle, friendly, affectionate spirit will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

Anton is survived by his wife, Debbie Zimmerman, his daughter, Ally Arrington, his grandson, Jack Mansfield, and his brother, Ray Zimmerman.
