Antoine "Deon"'s obituary

Antoine Deon Campbell died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Known by all as Deon, he was an exemplary son, husband, father, coach, mentor, employee, and leader. Above all else he was first and foremost a family man and his greatest joy in life was the pride he had in, and the love he had for, his three daughters.
He was born February 7, 1970 in Baltimore, MD. He attended Kenwood High School where he was known to be an exceptional athlete whose skills on the playing field were only matched by the strength and kindness of his character in all of his relationships. Deon played football and baseball. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Towson University and spent his career in the service of others as a social worker, advocate and leader. He also gave of himself as a coach and mentor to many youth who remember him today as a guiding force who had a positive impact on their lives.
As a young man Deon faced many medical challenges due to an injury and was the recipient of a liver transplant. He faced the daunting obstacles that this presented in his daily life with such grace that few knew of his struggles. He was always grateful for the gift of life that this gave him and hopes that organ donation will be a consideration for all that knew and loved him.
In 2002, through mutual friends, he met the woman who was to be the love of his life, Kathleen Kreuter, known by all as Kat. They knew soon after meeting that they wanted to share their lives with each other. They went on to raise their three girls in a home filled with love, laughter, and a deep appreciation of life (and sport!). Like any home with four women it had its challenges but Deon would not have traded it for the world.
In 2007, Deon took a leap of faith and moved his little family from Maryland to Texas, where they looked forward to the new opportunities. It was at this time that he began his work for the State of Texas, starting at the State School and working his way up to Manager of the licensing division. His knowledge, dedication and calm presence earned him many friends along the way. Though he quickly came to call Texas home, he never stopped rooting for the Ravens or antagonizing misguided Cowboys fans.
Often, Deon was so soft spoken he would have to repeat himself multiple times to be understood clearly. The exception to this was when he spoke of his three girls. There was nothing that gave him more joy or pride than his daughters and he wanted everyone to know about them and their accomplishments. He would rush home from work to watch them play, some days multiple sports, hopping from basketball to volleyball and soccer. No matter how tired he was, how many hours he worked, Deon always found time for his girls. They truly were the light of his life and his absence creates a void that will never be completely filled. His greatest legacy will be his love for his wife Kat and their girls.
Deon is survived by his wife Kathleen Kreuter Campbell (Kat), daughters Olivia, Amelia, and Evelyn, his mother Janice Walton, siblings Shawnette (Candy) Goines, Keyona King, Phillip Paul Byrd II, Phyllis (April) Denise Byrd, DeSalle Simon, and Kendra Sellers, and grandmother Rosa Campbell. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his dad Robert Goines, biological father Phillip Paul Byrd Sr. and his grandfather William Campbell.
