Hey everyone. As we are coming up on a year since Anthony's passing, I wanted to share some bittersweet news.

Neighborhood Bike Works has created an internship award in his honor that will be aimed at honoring a youth in the program who shares the personality characteristics that Anthony shared. The first ride will be on Nov. 20th  where we will be able to meet this special young person. We are so, so grateful for everyone who donated. NBW thinks we can do quite a few years of this internship, keeping Anthony's spirit alive.

I only got to meet and make his acquaintance for a short time, but he made a positive impression on myself and my wife Lorraine Charowsky. We send love and healing energy to everyone and our sincere apologies that we couldn’t attend the service.
In response to "What did you learn from Anthony?"

His favorite color was pink. His favorite comic book characters were Nightwing, Spider Gwen, and Miles Morales. His favorite game was Witcher 3. He was incredibly excited to play Cyberpunk 2077. His favorite book series was Aragon. He loved cooking Asian food. He had a great love of dragons, anime, Dungeons and dragons, Magic the Gathering, comic books, Warhammer 40K, video games, biking, and rugby. He was kind, blunt, quick witted, and funny. For all these things I remember about him, the one thing I will never forget is how much he meant to me. He told me to be strong, not locked myself in my room, and to go and make new friends. It may take time but I will do that and more. I'll read his favorite book series that I never got around to. I'll go to Japan like we promised we would. I will play cyberpunk to the end and more. I'll finish Lets Play, the web comic we were reading together. I will do everything I couldn't with him. So that when I see him later I can tell him all about them. I will miss you buddy.

Anthony showed up at Neighborhood Bike Works in late 2011 after which he quickly became a fixture. We would see him just about every day regardless if there was a youth program happening. Perhaps the most common question I heard from him was, "Is there anything I can do to help?" From stripping old bikes for parts, to repairing fleet bikes, to hauling bikes up and down stairs, to volunteering to help other kids in just about every program we had.... Anthony wanted to do it all. That summer he was hired to work with our summer camp. I remember one day hearing some of the kids and they all seemed to be repeating the same phrase, "Say no more." Perplexed as I was, I realized that was one of the things Anthony said a lot... especially after you asked him for help. "Say no more, I got this, I'll do it." This speaks so much to Anthony's personality.... kind, caring, and a person who you can truly depend on.

We made this video featuring Anthony on a random afternoon... he probably got out of school early and rushed to NBW to see what he could do. I was testing a video camera out and he was willing to show me around the shop and be my focal point. Purely genuine footage that was turned into a donate video for our website. While I think it's true that NBW might have helped change Anthony's life, I was blind having not seen how much he had changed the lives of so many others. Rest in peace and power, Anthony.

Philadelphia, PA, USA
On November 10th, the Nomads Family lost one of our members. Anthony Elijah Russell (‘13) was a Member of the original Vaux HSRFC that eventually grew in what the program is today. Anthony was a hardworking, dedicated Man who was a pleasure to coach while he was in high school. He always gave every bit of his effort on every play. Anthony’s Family and Friends are attempting to raise funds to get his remains back home from Alaska to Philadelphia. Any and all assistance will be a blessing. Rest Well Anthony.

Anthony worked for me at KPC and as you can see from this shot of our website, he was a central part of our family, ever the included and peace maker, but also ornery.

First off, my condolences to the family and close friends of Anthony. I wasn’t the closest to Anthony by any stretch but I can’t deny the impact he left me with during the time we spent together. You see, from the time that I met him, I always knew that Anthony was a special person. He had many things about him that lots of people lacked like, an unwavering kindness, bottomless empathy, and his totally candid nature that shocked me sometimes. But more than that, he was like a brother to me. One that was there whether you needed him or not, always in your corner like your own special cheerleader. I’ll always be grateful for how Anthony made being open with others and yourself, seem so easy. For how he made living despite being in circumstances he could/couldn’t control, seem so easy. For how he made starting from scratch to build a better life for oneself, seem so easy. For how he made trusting others when you’ve been given every reason not to, seem so easy...But most of all, I’ll always be grateful for the smiles and words of encouragement he gave to me when the seams in my life were slowly coming apart, despite how hard his life at the moment was. All the things that Anthony gave to me and others, are all things that I hope to be able to give to other people, friends and foe alike. I wish I could thank him for being what felt like a true friend..... But this’ll have to do for now. Thank you, Anthony. I hope you’ve found the peace you were looking for....

P.S- This probably won’t make much sense if anyone reads this, I wasn’t really sure how to say the things I wanted to in a way that would honor Anthony’s memory. Sorry if it like seems garble.

Sincerely,
Jabrea
