Sue's obituary

Annie Sue Chichester “Sue” (96) died on April 19, 2024, in Keller Texas, after suffering a stroke. Sue is a former resident of Marshall, Michigan. Sue was born on October 13, 1927, to Homer and Lex Carder in Tarrant Alabama the youngest of three children. She grew up in Tarrant surrounded by extended family. Her grandmother Lilly Carder taught her to read before she attended school. Whereupon she was placed two grade levels ahead. Being the youngest in all her classes led her to be quiet and shy. She participated in several sports in high school. She entered the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) at the age of 16 and was a member of Delta Zeta. She graduated with a degree in Lab Tech. While at Auburn Sue met her lifelong friend Reese. Sue and David were married on December 31, 1949, and together they had six children.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband David, her daughter Susan Lex (Susie), brothers Homer Jr. and Gene, her niece Carolyn and nephew Stephen. She is survived by her children Janet (Wayne), Stan (Roseanne), Allen (Sharon), John (Karen), Dan (Anita) and her grandchildren Justin, (Christine), Jonathan, Rachel, Benjamin, Christopher, Grant, Emiko and Luke.

Sue was devoted to her children and her grandchildren. She always put them first and tried to support them in any way she could. When her daughter Susie was diagnosed with brain damage, she searched tirelessly for therapies that would help her. This led her to a new career in working with Special Needs children. Along with a few other parents, she founded the Huntsville Achievement School Huntsville Alabama which served special needs children for over 60 years. Sue received a master’s degree from Western Michigan University in 1975 with a degree in special education. She worked as a learning disabilities consultant for the Calhoun Intermediate School District as a Learning Disabilities Consultant and served as principal for a school for severely mentally and multiply impaired children in Muskegon County. Sue was involved in local organizations such as the ARC benefiting families and their disabled children.

Sue’s Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Noon at Santa Rosas Beach Community Church in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service. Family requests donations to a charity of your choice.
