Anne's obituary
Anne St.Laurent, officially Annie Halina St.Laurent [née, Tkachuk], born in Cologne on March 19th 1946, died peacefully in Vancouver in the early hours of September 24th, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones. Anne is survived by the love her life, her husband Dennis as well as her children; Nicole & Darren, Grandchildren; Tiana & Luka, her sister Rose, brother Ted, nieces and nephews; Raymond, Richard, Lara, Erica, Jaime and Stacey as well as her Aunty Anne. There are countless others who felt like Anne touched them as a mother figure, a keen colleague, and a warm and dependable friend to many.
Anne was born to Ukrainian parents Michael and Pauline Tkachuk in post-war Germany. The young family soon began planning their migration to a new home in Canada where Anne’s Grandfather had been waiting for them in Vancouver to help them begin their new chapter. After settling in Coquitlam, British Columbia, they soon welcomed Rose & Ted, and Anne began growing into the caring and beautiful woman we have all come to know and love. In High School, Anne was keen about Cooking, Sewing and Mathematics. It was at Como Lake High School in Coquitlam where she met a young man called Dennis St.Laurent. They soon fell in love and became high school sweethearts. After graduating from High School in 1964, they married joyfully in New Westminster in 1966. As young couples often do, they worked their way up, learning to navigate the work force while living in humble homes. In 1973, they purchased their dream home in North Delta before welcoming their daughter, Nicole Leanne in 1973 and their son Darren Michael in 1976.
As a young woman, Anne spent several years as a bank teller, but insisted on being a homemaker and full-time Mom during the early years of Nicole & Darren’s childhood. As Dennis’s career with Telus began to wind down in the 1990’s, Anne decided to renew and reimagine a career in the financial industry. Starting as a teller at a local credit union in Surrey, she found her footing and quickly grew her talent. She contributed as a loans officer, manager and after earning her Human Resources Diploma at BCIT and her PIDP at age 50, she became a well-respected Human Resources specialist and consultant for Envision Credit Union until she retired for herself.
Anne with Dennis built a lifetime of beautiful memories. These include trips to Hawai’i and many road adventures to California and beyond. Anne & Dennis enjoyed sea cruising and visited countless destinations in the Americas and the Caribbean. Anne’s fondest memory of family adventure came in 1986, when the world’s fair visited Vancouver as EXPO’86. Anne, Dennis, Nicole & Darren would scarcely spend a night at home from May to October, exploring, learning, laughing, eating, and taking in the nightly fireworks show. The whole family, but especially Anne, was dazzled by the fair and reminisced about it often.
Anne was a caring and careful cook who loved turning out beautiful meals, especially traditional feasts at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She loved film and books and would often share her suggestions with breathless excitement.
In her later years, she found exceptional joy watching her Granddaughter Tiana develop her talent as a dancer, and her Grandson Luka as a tennis player and pianist.
Anne will be missed by all of us. Her endless tenderness and warmth, but strikingly, her incredible perspective and innate sense of forgiveness.
After a surprising resurgence of a second cancer, she passed away quickly, painlessly and beautifully. Anne will forever be missed and loved by all she touched. It’s as impossible to mention all who loved her as it is to adequately summarize a life.
We invite any and all to share their thoughts, long or brief, for all to read. We may grieve together but we will also celebrate the life of our dear Anne.
For now, the family intends to grieve quietly and we look forward to announcing a time later for us all to come together and celebrate her life.
The family has no particular requests regarding flowers or charities. Some causes that would have been meaningful for Anne would be BC Cancer, BC Diabetes or the Adoptive Parents Association of British Columbia. Thank You.
