Anne's obituary

Anne Marie Sheeran of Alexandria, VA, died on Monday, February 24, 2025.

She was born on July 8, 1939, to Fred and Alice Crowe in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and grew up on Sunset Avenue with her older brother, Ted. After graduating from Lowell State College (now UMass Lowell), she started her career in education. She married her husband, Jim, who served in the Navy with her brother, on July 24, 1965.

Anne and Jim lived briefly in Lincoln, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado before settling in the DC area for more than 30 years. Here, they raised three sons - Ned, Michael, and Andrew - first in Bowie, Maryland and later in Alexandria, Virginia. She returned to Alexandria from Denton, Texas after Jim died in March 2009.

Anne embodied the idea that “the mother’s heart is the child’s classroom.” She taught not only her sons, but also hundreds of elementary school students across Fairfax County. In her presence, any setting could become a classroom and any event a teachable moment.

She possessed a love of competition and sports that mirrored her own experiences. Her family rooted for the Boston Red Sox and Celtics, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Washington Redskins/Commanders, and she believed her fandom helped each team win multiple championships during her lifetime.

Those who knew her valued her wit and wisdom. She made friends easily and gave her time to many. She talked to everyone, often becoming a trusted advisor during life’s challenging moments. Her well-lived life was built on many small acts of kindness (both given and received), the strength she gathered from family and friends, and her Catholic faith.

She is survived by her three sons - Ned, Michael and Andrew; her sister-in-law, Hillie Crowe; her nephew, Dan Crowe and niece, Suzanne Crowe; and her brothers-in-law, David Sheeran and Bill Schuster.

A Mass for the repose of her soul will be held soon at St. Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria, VA. Later, she will be buried next to her beloved husband, Jim, in York, Nebraska.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
