In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to Assist with Funeral Expenses.

Background

Thank you so much for everyone's support during this difficult time.

Anna G. Kaufman Moon was born in Queens, NY on April 15th, 1930 to Jewish immigrant parents. In her teen years, she began to study modern dance under the tutelage of Martha Graham. Around this time, she also developed a love of chamber music, playing recorder in multiple ensembles across the greater NYC area.

As she approached her 30s, she independently purchased a Vespa and rode alone across the United States and Canada. Ever the free spirit, she took great joy into going against the “expected” norm of the “proper” lady in the 50s. Long after, her journal that she wrote during this time was produced into a book by her close friends.

Around the same time as her cross country excursion, she purchased her first camera, set up her own darkroom, and began taking candids across NYC. Her coverage of current events, protests, and social issues led her to be published in Time, Life, and Newsweek magazines. Over the next several decades, her photography appeared across numerous works, including Abbie Hoffman’s “Steal This Book”. She self-published her own photography book in 2002, entitled “Reflections of New York City 1963-1972”.

Over the last several decades, she took up a passion for organic farming and continued to support social causes well past her retirement. Her daughter, Janay, was her full-time caretaker into her final days.

In lieu of flowers, we'd appreciate if you could donate to help with funeral costs and a memorial fund for Anna. Our family has decided to move forward with cremation as one of Anna’s specific wishes after death was to be recycled. Through cremation, we can reduce the use of hazardous and non-environmentally friendly embalming chemicals, as well to use the ashes to incorporate into memorial art pieces for her family.

Anna had no life insurance policy, nor any savings for end-of-life expenses (death was never something she wanted to discuss openly). For the last decade, Anna has been under total care and financial support of her family during her decline from Alzheimer’s.

After discussing with our funeral director, we have broken down the immediate expenses as follows:

- Cremation Costs - $1750.00
- Crematory Fee - $425
- Urn Cost - $500

Any additional donations will be contributed directly towards familial expenses, specifically any additional funeral expenses and memorial projects to fulfill her final wishes.

Thank you so much for your support and care at this time. We were grateful to celebrate a life with Anna. We hope to honor her memory and her wishes as best we can.
