Ann Lee Staeger was born on a hot Tuesday, August 28th, 1928, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Her father, Robert Staeger, did watch repair and engraving at a downtown jewelry store. Her mother, Oleta Cauthen, originally from nearby McBee, South Carolina, attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill.
