Ann's obituary
Ann McMullen Kalil, 93, passed away on Saturday, February 19th, 2022 under the tender care of Hospice and her children.
Ann was born April 28th 1928 to Guy and Mildred McMullen in Dubois, Pennsylvania. She and her brother, Hugh, grew up in Salamanca, New York. In 1949 Ann graduated with a B.S. in Nursing from Keuka College in the Finger Lakes region of New York. One year later she married Nick Kalil and they moved to Brooklyn, New York. Buying their first house on Staten Island, Ann and Nick continued to raise their children until they all moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1972.
While living on Staten Island, Ann had a successful business, “Ann’s Flower Basket” where her creativity reigned. In Santa Barbara, she spent many years working for the Tri-County Blood Bank as Director of Nurses. An avid sailor, Ann lived and traveled on a sailboat with her husband, Nick, for five years. In 1995 Ann moved to California’s Bay Area and worked many years at Alameda Blood Bank. At age 70, Ann decided to join the Peace Corps and served two years in Dominica outside its capital, Roseau. As an RN, Ann taught classes on HIV/AIDS; she also used her business acumen to support the development of a women’s worker co-op.
In 2001 Ann returned to the US, settling on Staten Island once again. After retirement Ann continued to volunteer well into her eighties. She was a member of the Unitarian Church of Staten Island, the Richmond Choral Society (she was an alto and music was one of her many passions), and the CloseKnit knitting group at the Noble Maritime Museum. Ann also served on the Board of Directors for Sea Cliff Towers and the Staten Island Philharmonic.
In 2019 Ann moved to Escalon, California where she loved living with family, going to the UU Fellowship of Stanislaus County, visiting with her granddaughters, and spending time with her favorite lap dog.
Ann was predeceased by her parents, her brother, and her infant daughter Susan. She is survived by her four children and their partners: Karen & Wayne, Steven & Laura, Carol & Kent and Laurie & Walt; five grandchildren: Julie, Claire, Louise, Alia, and Anna; two great-grandchildren: Rose and Alexander; and a bevy of loving nieces and nephews.
Ann will be remembered for her quick smile, warmth and loving spirit. Her home was always filled with guests who appreciated her generous hospitality and great cooking.
