Anita's obituary

Anita Louise Price, 80, of Mystic, CT, passed away at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT, on June 1, 2024. Anita was born in Milwaukee, WI, on November 26, 1943 to Fred and Hertha Borst, who immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in the 1920’s.

Anita attended Homestead High School in Mequon, WI before studying at the University of Wisconsin Madison, where she earned a Fine Arts degree in 1965. After college, Anita worked as a commercial artist for Macy’s in San Francisco before becoming a flight attendant with World Airways, a charter airline that flew military troops to and from Asia during the Vietnam war years.

In 1967, she met Andrew Price in Japan while he was serving as a lieutenant in the Navy. They were married in 1968 and lived in Long Beach, CA; Arvada, CO; Princeton, MA; and Wilmington, NC, before settling in Mystic, CT in 1997. They raised a family of four children while Anita worked as a dental office receptionist and a successful free-lance artist. She specialized in water color paintings displayed and sold at juried art shows throughout New England. A local newspaper review described her paintings as “gentle and joyous”.

Living in New England, inspiration for her art came from its beautiful antique homes, gardens, plentiful beaches and unique shorelines. Anita loved to travel and painted from locations throughout the United States and Europe. Her paintings often reflected niche areas tucked away from the mainstream. When she was unable to paint on site she captured her idea or preferred composition with her camera. Anita's goal was to transport the viewer to a place of simplicity and tranquility where one can feel the sun, hear the breeze, smell the flowers and relax.

Anita’s greatest joy came from watching her children experience success through their education, jobs, and hobbies and watching them raise their own families. Although they lived at a distance she kept in regular contact with her 8 grandchildren, through encouraging their artistic creativity during family visits, by phone, or by sharing and discussing photos from their respective travels. It always brought a smile to her face knowing they were doing well, enjoying their lives, and continuing to grow. She worked to make life at home a secure and comfortable environment for her growing family, recognizing and demonstrating the importance of being available to discuss something that had occurred at school or to just talk and let them know she was proud of them. This was one of her many gifts to the family.

Anita is survived by her husband Andrew; her three sons Michael of Portland, OR; Stephen of Los Alamos, NM; Mark of Bellingham, WA; her daughter Michele of Fowlerville, MI; her sister Doris Meissner of Chevy Chase, MD; and eight grandchildren.

Anita's life will be celebrated by her close family at a small, private memorial in November. In lieu of flowers or donations, please upload written memories or photos of Anita to this site, which the family will draw from during her memorial service.
