Andrew's obituary
Andrew (Kung Fu) Ryan Dowd, 44, of Daly City, California passed away on November 12th after a decade-long struggle with alcoholism. Andrew was born in Toronto, Canada on June 20th, 1978 and grew up in New Jersey. He graduated from Metuchen High School and received a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from Rutgers University and a Master’s degree in Linguistics from UC Santa Cruz.
Andrew worked in the fields of linguistic transcription, machine learning, app development, and as an automotive mechanic and machinist at various times. He was passionate about music, the Irish language, cooking and baking, beer and cider brewing, motorcycles, and car racing, among dozens of other hobbies and interests. He was a founding member of Santa Cruz rockabilly band the Atomic Aces, was a committed and critical Catholic who followed Buddhist meditation practices, and was devoted to helping anyone who needed it while cursing up a storm, making inappropriate jokes, or inserting Simpsons quotes as often as possible.
Andrew is survived by spouse Elizabeth Carr; mother Pat (Moreland) Schultz (Lloyd); father Martin Dowd; siblings-in-law Andrew Carr (Sarah), Pete Boivin (Alexa), and Sadie Carr (JR); nieces and nephews Raymond, Claire, William, Drew, and Kieran; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Andrew is preceded in death by twin sister Jennifer (Dowd) Boivin, uncle Thomas Dowd, and grandparents Thomas & Nora (Jack) Dowd and Allen & Jewel (Rollins) Moreland.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Andrew’s deep involvement with the addiction recovery community, donations may be given to Refuge Recovery (refugerecovery.org) or SMART Recovery (smartrecovery.org) A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 14th at 10:00 am in the St. Francis Room of the United Irish Cultural Center of San Francisco (2700 45th Avenue, SF, CA 94116).
