Amena's obituary
On Thursday, December 21, 2023, Amena Rogers, beloved daughter,
mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, niece, cousin, and friend,
passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family after an intense battle
against cancer. She was seventy-one. Amena was born to Joan Anthony
& Henry Boozier in Harlem, NY, & raised by her grandparents, Louise &
Theodore Anthony, her mother, Joan, and her stepfather, Willie Yellock.
Amena graduated from John Bowne High School in Queens, NY. Shortly
after marrying Gaither Rogers in 1969, she started her own family &
raised her two girls in Far Rockaway, NY. Amena worked in accounting
& retired after over 25 years with Dime Savings Bank. Amena later
moved her family to Bayshore, Long Island, where she enjoyed
connecting with her Native American and indigenous roots. The family
was most important to Amena, including her ancestors. She proudly
traced her genealogy through many centuries and produced the Anthony
Family Pedigree Archive. Her empathy had no boundaries; she found a
way to care for everyone, far and near. Amena was a talented artist and
produced many extraordinary paintings over the years. She was a disco
queen and felt most free while captivating onlookers with her hustle and
dance skills.
2010 Amena moved to South Florida to be closer to her eldest daughter,
Threase. In South Florida, she enjoyed making friends at her local gym,
going to the racetrack, and winning battles against Florida's bugs.
Amena was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Alisha Ivette
Rogers, in May 2009 and her mother, Joan Louise Yellock, in August
2009. She is survived by her daughter Threase, her granddaughters,
Amena Louise and Jahneese Alexina, and her great-grandchildren,
Alivia, Victorious, and Tamar. She is also survived by her closest and
dearest cousins, who were always there for her emotionally and
spiritually: Ivy Scudder, Jacqueline Anthony, and Mark Hill, as well as a
host of aunts and cousins who meant the world to her.
Amena will rest on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, in Amityville Cemetery in
Amityville, NY, with her grandmother, Louise Anthony, and she will
sleep peacefully in the loving arms of her daughter, Alisha.
